Workshop 15 — Getting Promoted & Career Growth · Facilitator Lesson Plan
For: CSC office staff, case managers, bilingual volunteers. You don't need to be a career coach. You need to describe how the US workplace asks people to advocate for themselves, walk participants through the wins-list and raise-script on the slides, and route every "what should I do at MY job?" question to a CSC 1-on-1. The sentence you say more than any other today: "在美国, 公司通常希望员工主动开口 — 不是抱怨, 是把您已经做出的成绩说清楚。"
1 · At-a-Glance
| Workshop | 15 — Getting Promoted & Career Growth /
| Duration | 30 min core + 10 min Q&A |
| Audience | 6–20 LEP Chinese adults, mostly 40+; restaurant, home-care, retail, office-support, manufacturing, small-business workers |
| You'll need | Laptop, projector, WiFi, printed Quick Reference Card (section 12), bilingual sign-in sheet, ~20 copies of the resources handout, backup phone with workshop URL, pens, water |
| Slides URL | https://career-growth-workshop.pages.dev/ |
| Handout URL | https://career-growth-workshop.pages.dev/resources.html |
2 · Learning Objectives
After this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe how a US performance review works and what managers track.
- Start a monthly wins list on their phone — with numbers, not adjectives.
- Recite the 3-step raise script (thanks → results → ask) and name the right and wrong times to use it.
- Name one local low-cost continuing-education option (Alhambra Adult School, Monterey Park Adult Ed, an LACCD evening program, or Google Career Cert) and one way to check market pay.
Notice what is NOT here: "negotiate your specific raise," "decide whether to quit," "fix your boss." Those are CSC 1-on-1 work, not yours.
3 · Pre-Workshop Checklist (15 min before start)
Tech
- Open
https://career-growth-workshop.pages.dev/— test the language toggle (top-right). Default is 中文. - Slide 5 (activity) and Slide 8 (3-phase quiz: Q1, Q2, Q3) have "Reveal Answer" buttons — click each once to confirm they work, then refresh to reset.
- Load Slide 3 — confirm the red/gold bar chart (2.8 / 3.1 / 4.6 yrs) renders crisp on the projector.
- Bookmark the URL on your phone — service worker means the deck works offline once loaded.
Materials
- ~20 copies of the resources handout printed.
- This Quick Reference Card (section 12) at the lectern.
- Bilingual sign-in sheet at the door; pens at every seat.
Yourself
- Skim this lesson plan once (15 min).
- Speak the Slide 1 opening line aloud once.
- Memorize one number cold: CSC · 213-808-1758. Everything else can be looked up.
- Re-read Q&A 1, 2, 3 in section 8 — those are the three questions you WILL get.
4 · Audience Snapshot
Most of the room is from Monterey Park, Alhambra, Rosemead, or San Gabriel. Many have been at the same employer for 5–15 years — restaurant kitchens, home-care agencies, small Chinese-owned offices, hotel housekeeping, retail floors, manufacturing lines. A meaningful number have never had a formal performance review and have not had a meaningful raise in years. The most likely silent feeling in the room is "I've worked hard for 10 years and nothing changed." Don't shame that. The workshop lands on what they can start doing next month.
5 · Cultural & Bilingual Tips for This Workshop
- Frame, don't prescribe. Never say "you should ask for a raise." Describe the system; let the participant decide.
- Name the cultural friction directly (the big one). Asking for a raise sounds 不知足 (ungrateful) or 没大没小 (disrespectful of hierarchy) in many Mandarin-speaking families. Say it out loud once on Slide 7: "很多人觉得开口要加薪是不知足 — 但在美国, 这不是抱怨, 是把您已经做出的成绩说清楚。" Naming the friction lowers it.
- Acknowledge the "no review at my job" reality. Many participants work in small Chinese-owned businesses with no formal HR. Use this line on Slide 3: "如果您公司没有正式考核, 这一节的内容仍然适用 — 您可以自己记录成绩, 然后选合适的时机谈。"
- Bilingual cadence. Open each slide with Chinese, then English. Translate one key term per slide — the deck shows both; you point and explain, don't re-read both halves.
- Face-saving framing. (if someone has…). Never ask "who here has been turned down for a raise?" or "who has been at the same wage for 10 years?"
6 · Slide-by-Slide Script
Slide 1 · Title · ⏱ 1 min
— "Welcome. In 30 minutes: performance, raise, learning."
POINT TO: Title; CSC name in the corner.
Take 2–3 short answers.
WATCH FOR: Someone says "我在公司 10 年没加过工资。"
IF SHORT: Skip ASK; advance.
Slide 2 · Agenda · ⏱ 1 min
POINT TO: Three numbered cards (①
Quick hands. Tells you where to spend time. (Most go up on ② 加薪 — normal.)
IF SHORT: Skip the hands.
Slide 3 · How Performance Reviews Work · ⏱ 4 min
— "Your boss reviews your work yearly or quarterly. This drives raises and promotions. Look at the chart."
POINT TO: The horizontal bar chart — specifically the red bar showing 4.6 years for those who wait vs. the gold bar showing 3.1 years for those who ask vs. the 2.8-year market-average gold bar at top. Then point to the "What managers look for" list — on-time, quality, initiative, coworkers, learning, feedback.
WATCH FOR:
→ That's Q1 in section 8 — answer briefly, route to CSC 1-on-1 for the specific situation.
IF SHORT: Just the bar chart + one sentence on the criteria list. Skip annual-vs-quarterly cards.
Slide 4 · Monthly Wins List on Your Phone · ⏱ 3 min
— "Five minutes a month on your phone. When review or raise time comes, you have proof — not memory."
POINT TO: The phone-notes mockup (Mar–Jul entries with numbers); then the "How to do it" rules — especially "写数字: 节省 5 小时、培训 2 人" and the green-card framing bullet at the bottom.
Quick hands. (Almost no hands. Normal.)
WATCH FOR:
IF SHORT: Point to the phone mockup + "每月 5 分钟, 写数字" — skip the rules list.
Slide 5 · [ACTIVITY] What Counts as a Real Win? · ⏱ 3 min
POINT TO: Six cards. Read A and B aloud as the contrast: A "培训了 2 个新员工, 3 周内独立上岗" vs. B "我是个团队合作者."
ASK: Hands for each letter. "举手投 A — 具体的请举手。" Cycle through A/B/C/D/E/F. Wait until most letters get hands.
REVEAL: Click "揭晓答案." A, C, E are concrete — they have numbers + outcome. B, D, F are vague self-claims anyone could make.
WATCH FOR:
- Confusion on E ("6 个月零迟到"). Some think it's vague.
IF SHORT: Read A and B aloud, reveal A/C/E, skip the hand vote.
— "In 30 seconds, write one win from your own job using verb + number + outcome. Phone Notes, don't share aloud." (Plants the §13 60-min applied block; primes them for the wins list.)
SCAFFOLD (beginner): Chorus the formula together — say "动词 · 数字 · 结果" slowly, have the room repeat once. Then read A aloud: "培训 (动词) · 2 个新员工 (数字) · 3 周独立上岗 (结果)." Point at each part on the card as you say it. Three words, three fingers — that's the pattern.
Slide 6 · When to Ask for a Raise · ⏱ 2 min
— "Timing matters more than wording. Three windows."
POINT TO: The three timing cards — ✓ after a big win (1–2 weeks after), ✓ before the review cycle (Oct–Nov for annual companies), ✗ during layoffs/losses. Then the rule below: "至少做满一年才提加薪。"
WATCH FOR:
Don't moralize about why they waited.
IF SHORT: Three cards, 30 sec each. Skip the rule box.
Slide 7 · How to Ask — The Script · ⏱ 3 min
— "Three steps: thanks, results, ask. Calm and confident, no complaints. Most US companies expect this."
POINT TO: Each numbered script block. Read Step ② aloud verbatim — "过去 12 个月, 我培训了 2 名新员工、改进了流程每周省 5 小时、6 个月零请假" — because this is the exact thing they should practice.
— turn the no into a path.)
WATCH FOR:
→ That's Q3 in section 8 — answer briefly, route to CSC mock-conversation practice.
- Live request to role-play. DO NOT role-play on the projector.
IF SHORT: Read Steps ① ② ③ once each; skip the "if no" follow-up.
— "If the boss says 'no budget this year,' how do you turn that into a concrete 6-month follow-up plan?" — pins down a date + criteria. Don't role-play it on the projector; let the advanced participant share their phrasing in one sentence.)
SCAFFOLD (beginner): Pair an unsure participant with a stronger speaker. Have the stronger speaker read Step ② aloud first, then the beginner repeats it back — same words, slower. If English is the barrier, do all three steps in Mandarin first; the language of the conversation matches their actual boss. Point at each numbered block as you say it so they can follow visually if the audio loses them.
Slide 8 · [QUIZ] True or False? (3 phases) · ⏱ 4 min
REVEAL Q1: FALSE. Most raises happen because the employee asks. Bosses are busy. Silence = "I'm fine with my current pay." Tie it back to Slide 3: "还记得红色那条 4.6 年的柱子吗? 这就是为什么。"
Q2: "在公司工作 3 个月就应该要求加薪。"
REVEAL Q2: FALSE. Wait at least 12 months. Under 6 months looks premature. Exception: a "3-month review" was promised at hire — then follow that, with numbers.
REVEAL Q3: TRUE. Larger companies offer $2,000–5,250/year tuition reimbursement but rarely advertise it. First $5,250 is tax-free. Walmart, Starbucks, UPS, Target, Amazon all offer.
WATCH FOR: Q1 is the deck's emotional anchor — some in the room have lived the "stayed silent for 10 years" version. Do NOT moralize. After reveal: "下一节看怎么开口。"
IF SHORT: Q1 + Q3, skip Q2 (covered on Slide 6).
STRETCH (advanced): After Q1 reveal, ask: "Slide 3 的三个数字 — 市场平均 2.8 年、开口的 3.1 年、沉默的 4.6 年 — 谁能不看屏幕复述一下?" — "From memory: market average 2.8 yrs, ask 3.1 yrs, wait 4.6 yrs. Who can recite them without looking?" (Plants the data anchor. One volunteer is enough — don't drill.)
SCAFFOLD (beginner): Instead of "raise hand for TRUE / sit for FALSE," use a two-card vote: hold up the printed handout for TRUE, leave it down for FALSE. Visual, no English needed. After each reveal, say the answer in Chinese first, then English — and tie Q1 back to the gold/red bar chart by holding up two fingers ("3.1") then four fingers ("4.6"). No moralizing on Q1.
Slide 9 · Building Relationships with Your Supervisor · ⏱ 2 min
POINT TO: Three cards — daily small talk, volunteer for extra, reliability (deliver or flag early). Then the bottom note: "英语不太好? 没关系 — 准时、可靠、有数字证明的人到处受欢迎。"
ASK: "早上见到老板, 您一般说什么?" Quick answers. ("早上好" / "Good morning" are fine.)
WATCH FOR:
IF SHORT: Three card titles, 20 sec each. Skip the bottom rule.
Slide 10 · Continuing Education While Working · ⏱ 3 min
— "New skill → promotion → raise. LA has many low-cost options — no need to study full time."
POINT TO: Four cards. Linger on the LAUSD + SGV card: "圣盖博谷有两个地方很方便 — Alhambra Adult School 和 Monterey Park 成人学校 (AUSD/MPUSD), 晚上 6 点到 9 点, 免费 ESL、电脑、护工 CNA、烹饪。" Then point to LACCD evening programs — East LA College, LA Trade-Tech, LA City College, Pasadena City College — $46/unit for CA residents.
Monterey Park、Alhambra、San Gabriel?" Quick show of cities. Then point at the closest adult school.
WATCH FOR:
Route to CSC.
HR 「Do we have tuition assistance?」"
IF SHORT: Name Alhambra + Monterey Park adult schools and one LACCD campus; skip Google certs.
Slide 11 · Stay or Look Elsewhere? · ⏱ 2 min
POINT TO: Left column (留下) and right column (换工作). Then the bottom rule: "换工作平均加薪 10–20%, 原公司加薪只 3–5% — 但要先有 offer 再辞职。"
Don't push if no answer.
WATCH FOR:
→ DO NOT advise.
IF SHORT: Skim both columns; emphasize "先有 offer 再辞职" + the 小红书/WeChat line.
Slide 12 · How We Can Help You (CSC Services + QR) · ⏱ 2 min
— "CSC services are free — 1-on-1 career counseling, raise-talk practice, school referrals, pay research, workplace English."
POINT TO: Five service cards; the phone 213-808-1758; the QR code linking to the resources page.
2–3 short answers ("start the wins list," "call CSC about ESL," "ask HR about tuition aid").
WATCH FOR: People writing the phone number. Wait 10 seconds. People who linger — they have a private question. Stay 5 extra min at the door.
IF SHORT: Phone + QR + one closing sentence. Skip the ASK.
Time budget check: 1+1+4+3+3+2+3+4+2+3+2+2 = 30 min.
7 · Interactive Moments
| Slide | Type | Time | Prompt | Notes |

| 2 | Show of hands | 30 sec | "哪个主题对您最重要?" | Most pick 加薪. Tells you where to spend Q&A time. |
| 3 | Open question | 30 sec | "红色 4.6 年的柱子 — 为什么差这么多?" | Plant the "asking helps" insight before Slide 8 Q1. |
| 5 | Vote + reveal | 3 min | "A 到 F — 哪三张是具体成绩?" | Answer: A, C, E. Concrete = numbers + outcome. |
| 6 | Open question | 30 sec | "为什么 10–11 月比 1–2 月开口更好?" | Answer: budgets get set before reviews are written. |
| 8 | T/F quiz (×3) | 4 min | Q1: silence = automatic raise; Q2: 3 months = ask; Q3: tuition aid is hidden | FALSE / FALSE / TRUE. Q1 ties back to Slide 3's bar chart. |
| 10 | Show of cities | 30 sec | "您住 Monterey Park 还是 Alhambra?" | Point them at the closest adult school. |
| 2–3 answers max. |
8 · Common Participant Questions (Q&A Anchor)
Rule: Never give specific raise/job advice ("you should ask for $X"). Always route to a named resource. Default sentence: "这要看您具体的工作和老板 — 我们一对一帮您准备, 213-808-1758, 免费。"
Q1. "我老板从来不给我反馈 — 我应该主动问吗?" / "My boss never gives me feedback. Should I ask?" Route to: CSC 1-on-1 mock-conversation practice · 213-808-1758.
Q2. "我要是提加薪, 老板会不会针对我?" / "Will asking for a raise put a target on my back?" Route to: CSC 1-on-1 career counseling · 213-808-1758.
Q3. "我英语不好, 能升职吗?" / "I don't speak English well — can I still get promoted?" Route to: Alhambra Adult School / Monterey Park Adult Ed (free evening ESL) + CSC ESL classes.
Q4. "我已经 8 年没加过工资 — 现在再开口太晚了吗?" / "8 years with no raise — too late to ask?" Route to: CSC 1-on-1 raise-talk practice · 213-808-1758.
Q5. "我可以问同事工资吗?" / "Can I ask coworkers what they're paid?" Route to: Resources handout — pay research section.
Q6. "公司不报销学费, 我自己学夜校来得及吗?" / "No tuition aid — is night school worth it?" Route to: Resources handout — Free/Low-Cost LA Continuing Education section.
Q7. "我应该换工作, 还是再等等?" / "Should I quit and look elsewhere?" Route to: CSC 1-on-1 + AJCC walk-in for resume coaching (resources page).
Q8. "我手机记的成绩, 老板看不到 — 真的有用吗?" / "My wins list is private — does it really help?" Route to: Resources handout — Monthly Wins Tracking Template.
9 · Recovery Plans
- Internet fails: Printed handouts + phone backup. Slides cached offline via service worker. Skip QR demo.
- Only 3 people: Sit in a circle. Skip hand counts; ask directly. Extra time on Slide 5 activity and Slide 7 script. Offer 1-on-1 CSC referrals.
- 25+ people: Clusters of 4. Mic if available. For Slide 8 quiz, "stand if TRUE, sit if FALSE" reads across a big room. Stay 10 extra min at the door.
- Silent group: Wait 7 full seconds. Re-ask with "如果有人…" framing. Share a short story of your own to model length.
Walk toward another part of the room. If they ask deep specifics: "留个电话, 我们一对一帮您看。"
- Running long (>5 min over at Slide 7): Skip Slide 9 entirely (relationships); Slide 10 — just name Alhambra + Monterey Park, skip Google certs; Slide 11 — emphasize "先有 offer 再辞职" and the 小红书/WeChat line, skip the columns.
- Live "my boss is awful" disclosure: "听到了, 谢谢您分享。" Do NOT solve on the projector. "下课后单独谈, 也欢迎您约一对一。" Move on.
- Specific raise/quit question you can't answer: "好问题 — 这要看您具体的工作和老板。CSC 一对一帮您看, 免费, 213-808-1758。" Always route. Never guess.
If you finish early (5 / 10 / 15 min spare):
Don't default to "any questions?" — silence will eat the time, and on this topic silence sounds like "I have nothing to say." Run one of these activities matched to your spare-time budget.
- 5 min spare — Round-the-room one-word check: "用一个词说说,今天最重要的一件事是什么?" / "In one word, what's the most important thing from today?" Take 8–10 quick answers. Closes the loop without dragging.
- 10 min spare — Pair-share raise-script rehearsal. Pairs take turns reading Slide 7 Step ② aloud, but each person swaps in one real number from their own job — "过去 12 个月, 我…" Full activity in §13 Finish-Early Extension below.
- 15 min spare — Use the first sub-block of the 60-Min Variant (see §13): everyone opens phone Notes and writes 3 wins from the past 3 months using the Slide 5 "verb + number + outcome" pattern. Stands on its own as a 10-min hands-on block; if you have a real 15, add a brief group-coach of one volunteer's bullet.
If a question goes runaway long:
- "好问题。让我先记下来,我们在 1-on-1 / 资源页面里看更深。" — "Good question. Let me write it down — we'll go deeper in 1-on-1 / on the resource page."
- Write it visibly on a whiteboard or paper "parking lot." Move on. Especially important on this topic: "我老板…" stories want to become 15-minute therapy sessions. Parking lot + CSC 1-on-1 routing.
10 · Closing & Next Steps (last 5 min)
Translation: "Three things today: 1) monthly wins list on your phone — numbers, not adjectives 2) the 3-step raise script: thanks, results, ask — pick the right time 3) cheap learning paths: Alhambra and Monterey Park adult schools, LACCD evenings, employer tuition aid. Next steps: handout, QR, leave a number if you want 1-on-1 raise-talk practice."

Top 5 questions you'll get:
- "我老板从来不给反馈 — 我该问吗?" → Yes, every 3 months. CSC 1-on-1 to practice.
→ In normal companies, no — use the 3-step script. Small/emotional boss = CSC 1-on-1.
→ Yes. Reliability matters more. Adult-school ESL = Alhambra / Monterey Park.
→ Not too late. Start wins list now, ask in 3 months.
→ I can't decide for you. CSC 1-on-1 + always have offer before quitting.
Emergency phrases:
(if someone…)
- Redirect dominant speaker: "我们听听其他人的看法。"
- Specific question: "这要看您的具体情况 — 我们一对一免费帮您看, 213-808-1758。"
- Cultural friction: "在美国, 开口不是抱怨, 是把您已经做出的成绩说清楚。"
- Out of scope: "辞职/换工作这种决定, 请先约一对一。"
Three numbers/facts to know cold:
- CSC: 213-808-1758 (1-on-1 career counseling, raise-talk practice, ESL, all free).
- The chart: Market avg 2.8 yrs · Ask = 3.1 yrs · Wait = 4.6 yrs to first promotion.
- Tuition aid: $5,250/year tax-free at Walmart, Starbucks, UPS, Target, Amazon. Ask HR.
Bilingual one-liners (verbatim):
If something breaks:
- WiFi out → printed handouts + phone backup (slides offline via SW).
- Projector dies → walk Slides 3 (bar chart), 5 (activity cards), 7 (script), 10 (schools) around the room — these four carry most of the content.
- Question you can't answer → "CSC 同事帮您看更准, 免费, 我让他们联系您。" + write down name and phone.
Never say:
- "You should ask for a raise." Describe; don't prescribe.
- "Your boss is wrong." → No moralizing about the boss. Route to CSC 1-on-1.
- "I think you should quit." → Never. Route to CSC + AJCC + "先有 offer 再辞职."
- "You'll definitely get the raise if you ask." → No guarantees. "用这套方法成功率高很多。"
13 · 60-Minute Variant (when you have a full hour)
Use this when: Your slot is 60 minutes instead of 30+10, OR you finish the core 30-min teach with significant time remaining, OR the room asks for hands-on practice ("能不能教我们具体怎么写?"). The variant ADDS 30 min of applied work after the 30-min core — it does NOT re-run the same slides.
Don't lecture longer. The 30-min core is calibrated to LEP-adult attention. Extra time goes to PRACTICE — writing real wins, rehearsing the real script with a real number. The wins list and the raise script only stick if they get said out loud once before participants leave the room.
Finish-Early Extension (10 min — drop in after Slide 7 or at close)
The core skill of this workshop is saying Step ② out loud with a real number from your own job. That's also the part participants are most likely to skip — they nod at the slide, then never rehearse it. This pair-share rehearsal fixes that.
Pair people up (3-person triads at an odd count). Have the deck on Slide 7. — "We'll practice Step ② — but with one real number from your own job. Start with '过去 12 个月, 我…'"
- Activity (7 min): Pairs take turns. Person A says their Step ② out loud (~30 sec), Person B listens for a number; then swap. Two rounds — so each person says it twice, second time tighter. While they're talking, walk the room. Listen for one weak one (vague: "我做了很多事") and one strong one (concrete: "过去 12 个月, 我培训了 3 名新同事, 平均 4 周独立上岗"). Tap each on the shoulder: "等下能不能分享一下?"
- Debrief (2 min): Call on the strong one first — "请说一遍给大家听。" Then the weak one (with their permission), and rewrite it live: "刚才说『我做了很多事』 — 这个月做了哪三件最具体的? 数字是多少?" Pull one number out of them on the spot, recast it on the board: "过去 12 个月, 我 ___ 了 ___ 次/小时/人, 帮公司 ___。" That live recast IS the teaching.
60-Minute Variant — Applied Block (30 min, added after Slide 8)
The 30-min applied block lives after Slide 8 (quiz) — so participants have heard the full reveal of "silence costs 1.5 years" before they sit down and write their wins. Drop it in, then return to Slides 9–12 for the close. (If you're tight, you can also cut Slide 9 + 11 and use this block as the closing third of the hour.)
Time: 30 min (35 if you include the 5-min wrap below)
Materials added:
- Participants' own phones with Notes app (or 微信文件传输助手) — confirm with a quick "都带手机了吗?" before starting.
- 1 printed copy of the Slide 5 "verb + number + outcome" pattern card per participant (or just leave Slide 5 visible as reference).
- Whiteboard + dry-erase marker (or large flip-chart paper) for the group-coach rewrite.
- Optional: a redacted screenshot of a sample wins list (3–5 bullets) projected as a model.
Sub-block 1 — Write 3 wins on your phone · ⏱ 10 min
Re-show Slide 5 A/C/E as the model. Tell them you will NOT ask them to read aloud unless they volunteer — face-saving up front.
- (7 min) Quiet writing. Walk the room. If someone is stuck, sit beside them and ask one question: "上个月您手上最忙的一件事是什么? — 这件事帮公司省了什么 / 多了什么?" Pull one number out. Don't write it for them.
Quick hands; encourage. No content shared aloud yet.
Sub-block 2 — Group-coach one bullet from vague → concrete · ⏱ 10 min
- (1 min) Ask for one volunteer to share one bullet anonymously — "我念出来, 不说是谁的。" Walk over, ask permission, take their phone or have them read it aloud. If no volunteer in 10 sec, use a pre-written weak sample: "我是个认真负责的员工。"
- (7 min) Project (or write on whiteboard) and coach live: read the vague version → "这句话里有数字吗? 没有 — 任何人都能这么说。" Then pull it apart with the room: "做了什么? 多久? 结果是什么?" Rewrite together on the board. Example arc: "我帮客户" → "上个月我帮 12 位客户解决了订单问题, 没有一个投诉" → "过去 30 天, 我处理 12 单客户问题, 0 投诉, 平均回复时间 4 小时。"
Sub-block 3 — Whisper-rehearse Slide 7 three-step script with a neighbor · ⏱ 10 min
- (1 min) Re-show Slide 7. "现在两两一组 — 把刚才写的 3 条变成 Step ②, 再加上 Step ① (谢谢) 和 Step ③ (请求)。声音不用大 — 跟旁边的人小声练。" Reframe loudly: "这不是表演 — 是练习开口。声音越小越好, 越练越熟。"
- (7 min) Whisper-rehearsal in pairs. Two full rounds (each person does all three steps twice). Walk the room. Listen for: (a) someone who keeps starting with a complaint ("我老板从来不…") — gently redirect: "Step ② 是您的成绩, 不是公司的问题, 先把成绩说完。" (b) someone who can't get past "感谢您给我这个机会" — encourage them to keep going to Step ②, even if rough.
Close (5 min, optional — if you have 65 min total): "今天每人说一句 — 您下个月会做哪一件事? 简短一句话。" Go round-the-room, each participant names one concrete commitment ("我下周一开始记 wins list" / "我 10 月找老板谈" / "我下个月报 Alhambra 的 ESL"). No counter-questions — affirm and move on. Close with the CSC phone line: "想约一对一加薪练习, 留个电话给我。"

Differentiation in the variant
- For advanced learners (room of office workers, mid-career professionals with some review experience): Run the full 60-Min Variant. Push them in Sub-block 2 — instead of you coaching one volunteer, pair them up and have them coach each other's bullets vague→concrete. They get to teach, which deepens it. In Sub-block 3, push them to do the rehearsal in English if their job is English-speaking.
- For mixed-proficiency rooms: Pair an advanced participant with a beginner in Sub-block 1 and Sub-block 3. The advanced participant helps the beginner translate "动词 · 数字 · 结果" into their actual job language. In Sub-block 2, take the volunteer from the more confident half — the rewrite arc is the model for the beginners.
- For beginner-heavy rooms (recent immigrants, restaurant/home-care workers with no formal review): Expand Sub-block 1 to 15 min (give more writing time and walk the room more). Compress Sub-block 2 to 5 min — use a pre-written weak sample on the board instead of asking for a volunteer, so no one feels exposed. Keep Sub-block 3 at 10 min but allow whisper-rehearsal entirely in Mandarin — language match boss, not English.
Routing & boundary
Same rules as the 30-min core: no specific raise-amount advice, no quit-or-stay decisions, no "your boss is wrong" judgments. The applied block is rehearsal, not decision-making. Specifically:
- If a participant says during Sub-block 2 "我老板永远不会同意" — do NOT solve on the projector. "听到了 — 您这种情况一对一帮您看比较准。" Park it; move on.
- If "我想辞职" comes up during Sub-block 3 — same rule. "辞职前请先约 CSC 一对一, 我们帮您看市场价、看 offer。213-808-1758."
- If someone wants to role-play their actual boss live — politely decline. "今天我们练通用的话术 — 您具体的老板, CSC 一对一更适合, 那边可以慢慢练。"
Always close by naming the 1-on-1 follow-up: CSC 213-808-1758 for raise-talk practice + market-pay research; AJCC walk-in for resume coaching if they're stay-or-go undecided; Alhambra / Monterey Park Adult School for ESL if language is the blocker.
14 · Flashcards & Activities ·
There is a 6-card take-home deck for this workshop — vocabulary, a dialogue, a fact sheet, tips, useful info, and a diagram.
Print 打印: 打开卡片 Open the deck · 直接打印 Print now. Prints 2 cards per landscape sheet (3 sheets per deck). Print one deck per participant, plus 1–2 spare decks for games; cut along the dashed lines.
Hand them out at the close (§10) — the deck is the take-home companion to the written action plan.
Best-fit activities for THIS workshop (full menu of 8 at the flashcards page) ·
Pairs read the dialogue in both languages, switch roles, then swap in their own situation.
Facilitator reads true/false statements; hands up for true; check the fact card (same format as the slide-7 quiz).
Always close with · 收尾必做 — 带走一张 Keep One Card (whole deck 整套 · 2 min): each participant picks the ONE card most useful to them right now and tells a neighbor why.
