Workshop 11 — Driving & Delivery · Facilitator Lesson Plan

For: CSC office staff, case managers, bilingual volunteers. You don't need to be a driver, accountant, or DMV clerk. You need to be a calm bilingual presence who follows this script and routes hard questions to DMV, VITA, and legal aid. Gig work is one path among several — don't sell it, just show the math.

1 · At-a-Glance

Workshop11 — Driving & Delivery /
Duration30 min core + 10 min Q&A
Audience6–20 LEP Chinese adults, mostly 35+, many already drive
You'll needLaptop, projector, WiFi, QRC (section 12), sign-in sheet, ~20 handouts, backup phone, pens, water
Slideshttps://driving-workshop.pages.dev/
Handouthttps://driving-workshop.pages.dev/resources

2 · Learning Objectives

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. List the documents needed to apply for an AB 60 California license (no SSN required).
  2. Sign up for DoorDash or Uber Eats with an ITIN — the 5 phone steps and the insurance gap.
  3. Estimate take-home pay from gross gig earnings (~55¢ of every $1, after gas, wear, and self-employment tax).
  4. Choose between gig and full-time based on their own need for flexibility vs. benefits — and name 2–3 full-time options (USPS, Amazon DSP, Access Services, school bus).
  5. Know where to go for free help: DMV (AB 60), VITA at CSC (1099 taxes), legal aid (accident / labor).

4 · Audience Snapshot (read before walking in)

Most are 35–60, recent or mid-stage immigrants from mainland China or Taiwan, living in the SGV (Monterey Park, Alhambra, Rosemead, El Monte, San Gabriel). Many already drive for family errands and heard about DoorDash via WeChat groups but aren't sure if they qualify without a green card or SSN. Some came because a friend mentioned AB 60; a few are curious about CDL trucking. Almost all want one answer: "Can I actually start, and how much will I really take home?"

5 · Cultural & Bilingual Tips for This Workshop

6 · Slide-by-Slide Script

13 slides, ~30 min. SAY is your opening line (verbatim or close). POINT TO keeps your finger on the visual. ASK turns the slide into a conversation. WATCH FOR lists the usual confusion. IF SHORT is your trim card.

Slide 1 · Title · ⏱ 1 min

— "Welcome. In 30 minutes: license, gig apps, and full-time driving."

POINT TO: Title; the "30 min" mention.

— "What's the one thing you most want to figure out today?" (Take 2–3 quick answers.

IF SHORT: Skip ASK, advance.

Slide 2 · Agenda · ⏱ 1 min

POINT TO: The three numbered cards: ①

WATCH FOR: Anyone who already has a CA license — they'll be a peer resource on slide 4.

Slide 3 · Types of Driving Jobs · ⏱ 3 min

POINT TO: Each card:

(Quick show of hands per card.)

WATCH FOR: Confusion between "gig" (no boss, own car, no benefits) and "delivery driver" (company truck, paycheck, benefits).

IF SHORT: Read the four headline pay ranges and advance.

Slide 4 · AB 60 License · ⏱ 3 min

POINT TO: Two columns: 身份证明 (pick ONE) left, 加州居住证明 (need TWO) right. Then the bottom bar:

Peer voice beats yours 10x. If yes, give them 30 seconds.

WATCH FOR — answer immediately:

IF SHORT: Headline ("AB 60 = CA license without SSN"), point to docs columns, mention "not for air travel," advance.

— "If someone has lived in CA five years but has no utility bill in their name (lives with family), what else counts as proof of residency?" (Answer: bank statements, tax forms, school records for a child, employer letter, lease addendum. Real-world residency-proof gap; surface it now so the room knows the workaround exists.)

SCAFFOLD (beginner): Use third-person framing — never "do you have…". Read the left column aloud: "如果有人要申请 AB 60,身份证明这一栏需要一份 — 护照、外国驾照、领事卡 — 任选一个。" Then the right column: "居住证明这一栏需要两份 — 水电账单、银行单、租房合同 — 任选两个。" Say the numbers "一份 / 两份" with one finger then two fingers. The visual count beats the bilingual list for low-ESL participants.

Slide 5 · Activity: Which App Pays the Most? · ⏱ 4 min

Two-phase reveal: vote → click

POINT TO: The four pay cards. Read each range aloud.

Quick tally.

WATCH FOR: "我朋友说 Uber 更好." Don't argue: "每个人的车、地区、时段不一样 — 我们说的是 LA 平均。"

IF SHORT: Skip the vote. Point to DoorDash, say "usually wins, but subtract gas."

— "The $19–25/hr the app shows is gross. Subtract $6 gas + $3 wear + $5 tax — what's your real take-home?" (Answer: roughly $5–11/hr. This is the slide's hidden lesson; pull it out for the experienced gig drivers in the room.)

SCAFFOLD (beginner): Read just the headline number on each card aloud — "Uber 17 到 22, Lyft 16 到 20, DoorDash 19 到 25, Instacart 18 到 24." Hold up four fingers and ask people to point to the highest one. No vote pressure; visual-only is fine.

Slide 6 · DoorDash / Uber Eats Setup · ⏱ 3 min

(Common answer: "我没有 SSN" — that's your cue.)

SAY when SSN comes up: "没有 SSN 也可以 — 用 ITIN(个人税号)。

WATCH FOR: Someone with neither → "CSC 可以帮您申请 ITIN — 来找我之后聊。"

IF SHORT: Read steps 1–5, say "ITIN OK, no SSN needed," advance.

Slide 7 · Car Insurance · ⏱ 3 min

POINT TO: The warning card ("⚠️ 接单时不在保障范围"). Then the rideshare endorsement card ($20–40/月).

Don't expect a confident answer — the point is to make them feel the gap.

Geico、Progressive、State Farm 都有。"

WATCH FOR: Drivers already working without the endorsement. Do not shame.

ROUTE OUT (do NOT answer): Any specific accident or liability question → "这个让律师帮您看 — CSC 可以推荐免费法律咨询。"

IF SHORT: Headline only: "Personal insurance doesn't cover gig work. Add rideshare endorsement, $20–40/mo."

Slide 8 · Taxes for Gig Workers · ⏱ 4 min

POINT TO — the orange donut chart first: "每赚 $100,大约 $55 真正到手。"

Then the four info cards: 1099-NEC, ~15.3% self-employment tax, quarterly dates (4/15 · 6/15 · 9/15 · 1/15), deductibles (67¢/mile or actual gas/repairs).

Wait. Common guesses $10–20. Reveal: $25–30.

WATCH FOR: Biggest "aha" of the workshop. People assume the weekly DoorDash deposit IS take-home. It is not. Say twice: "App 给您的钱 — 还没扣税。"

ROUTE OUT: Any specific tax question, past returns, audits → "这个让 VITA 帮您看。

IF SHORT: Skip the ASK. Donut + "save $25–30 of every $100. Use Stride or Everlance for miles. Free VITA at CSC."

Slide 9 · True/False Quiz · ⏱ 3 min

Multi-phase: Q1 → vote → reveal → Q2 → vote → reveal.

WATCH FOR: People who got Q1 wrong — don't single them out.

IF SHORT: Q1 only; skip Q2 (confidence-builder, not new content).

STRETCH (advanced): After Q1 reveal: "如果每周赚 $800,您应该当场存多少进另一个账户准备交税?" — "If you make $800 a week, how much should you move into a separate account that day for tax?" (Answer: $200–240. The discipline of moving it on payday is what keeps gig drivers from owing in April.)

SCAFFOLD (beginner): For the "$25–30 per $100" math, hold up a real $100 bill (or printout) and physically move three $10 bills to the side. — "These three — not yours, they're the government's. The rest is yours." The physical motion lands the rule for people who lose the percentages.

Slide 10 · Full-Time Driving Jobs · ⏱ 1.5 min

POINT TO: USPS ($20–25/hr + pension) · Amazon DSP ($19–22/hr) · Access Services 残障专车 ($20–27/hr) · LA 校车 ($22–28/hr + summers off).

(No wrong answer.)

WATCH FOR: People assume USPS and Amazon DSP need a CDL. They do not — regular license is fine. Say so explicitly.

ROUTE OUT: Application help → 1-on-1 at CSC.

IF SHORT: Read the four pay numbers. "No CDL needed for USPS or Amazon DSP."

Slide 11 · CDL-A Trucking · ⏱ 1.5 min

POINT TO: Three steps: 培训 → 考 CDL-A → 公司聘用 (Schneider, Werner, J.B. Hunt often reimburse tuition). Then the warning card.

WATCH FOR — critical caveat: CDL requires SSN and work authorization. AB 60 is NOT enough. Also 21+, DOT physical, drug test.

IF SHORT: "CDL = $60–80K but needs SSN, 21+, training. Schools on the handout."

Slide 12 · CSC Services · ⏱ 1.5 min

POINT TO: Five cards: AB Then 📞 213-808-1758 · cscla.org · 767 N Hill St.

WATCH FOR: People copying the phone number — that means they're ready to book. Greet them after.

IF SHORT: Read the phone number twice. Point to the address. Advance.

Slide 13 · Resources + QR · ⏱ 1.5 min

POINT TO: QR code; the three resource cards (CSC, DMV, IRS).

WATCH FOR: Lingerers by the projector — private question (status, taxes, past accident). Stay 5 extra minutes.

8 · Common Participant Questions

Rule: Never give legal, tax, immigration, or medical advice. Always route.

Route to: CSC ITIN help (213-808-1758); VITA at tax season.

Route to: DMV (1-800-777-0133, press 3 for Chinese).

Route to: Free VITA at CSC (Jan–Apr).

Route to: Bet Tzedek / Asian Americans Advancing Justice — LA. Never improvise on liability.

Route to: VITA at CSC.

CDL。" Route to: Handout section 4 (training schools); WorkSource WIOA grant up to $5K.

Route to: Stride / Everlance apps (free, on handout).

Route to: 1-on-1 career counseling at CSC.

9 · Recovery Plans

Internet fails: Use the handouts (sections 1–6 cover the slide content). The deck caches offline via service worker — phone backup still works. Skip the QR demo; point to the printed handout.

Projector dies: Walk slides 4 (AB 60 docs), 5 (App pay compare), and 8 (税务 donut) around the room on your phone — those three carry the most visual weight. Read SAY lines louder; let people pass the phone for 30 seconds each table.

Only 3 people show up: Sit in a circle. Skip the vote on slide 5 and show-of-hands on slide 9; do them as group discussion. More time on Q&A.

25+ people show up: Cluster chairs in 4s. Use the mic. For votes, give a 5-sec window and count quickly. Stay 5 min at the door — private status/accident/back-tax questions come there.

Silent group: Wait 7 seconds before re-asking. Re-ask with "如果有人…" framing. Share your own example: "我有个朋友先开 DoorDash 补贴家用,后来转做 USPS。"

One participant dominates (often the 5-year Uber veteran): "好的,谢谢分享。 Walk physically toward another part of the room. Pull them aside after — they often have real value to share.

Running long (>5 min over at slide 8): Skip the ASK on slide 8. Q1 only on slide 9. SSN warning only on slide 11.

If you finish early (5 / 10 / 15 min spare):

Don't default to "any questions?" — silence will eat the time, and on this topic people often won't ask in public (status, debt, an unreported accident). Run one of these matched to your spare-time budget.

If a question goes runaway long:

Hard question you can't answer: "好问题。 Write it down. Never improvise.

10 · Closing & Next Steps (last 5 min)

13 · 60-Minute Variant (when you have a full hour)

Use this when: Your slot is 60 minutes instead of 30+10, OR you finish the core 30-min teach with significant time remaining, OR the room asks for hands-on practice ("can you show us the DoorDash sign-up?"). The variant ADDS 30 min of applied work after the 30-min core — it does NOT re-run the same slides.

Don't lecture longer. The 30-min core is calibrated to LEP-adult attention. Extra time goes to PRACTICE — booking, signing up, math drills — not more teaching. Driving is a high-routing topic; extra time is for participants to leave with one concrete next step (an appointment booked, an app downloaded, a math worksheet in hand).

Finish-Early Extension (10 min — drop in after Slide 8 or at close)

Activity: Take-Home Math Drill. Small groups compute net pay for three sample gig weeks using the 55% rule + 67¢/mile, then compare to a USPS W-2 paycheck. This is Slide 8 applied — the donut chart turned into a worksheet they take home.

60-Minute Variant — Applied Block (30 min, added after Slide 12)

Three sub-blocks of ~10 min. Participants leave with: a DMV appointment time-slot identified (sub-block 1), a DoorDash account started or one specific blocker named (sub-block 2), and the math worksheet in hand (sub-block 3). All three stop short of decision-making — they're practice runs.

Time: 30 min (35 if you include the 5-min wrap below)

Materials added:

Sub-block 1 — Live DMV AB 60 Appointment Booking · ⏱ 10 min

Facilitator screen-shares the DMV appointment booking flow on the projector. Participants shadow on their own phones — they're not booking for real today, they're walking the screens so the first real booking at home feels familiar.

Sub-block 2 — DoorDash Driver Onboarding Shadow · ⏱ 15 min

Facilitator screen-shares the DoorDash driver sign-up flow. Same shadow model — participants follow on their phones. Five fields, three of which trip people up.

Sub-block 3 — Take-Home Math Drill Close · ⏱ 5 min

Hand out the math worksheet from the Finish-Early Extension above (don't run the full 10-min drill — too long here). Walk one example aloud, hand it to them to do at home.

Close (5 min, optional — for 65-min total slots): Round-robin one-line share: "下周您要做哪一件具体的事?" — "What's the one concrete thing you'll do next week?" Write each on the whiteboard. Greet anyone naming a CSC service after.

Differentiation in the variant

Routing & boundary

Same rules as the 30-min core: no legal, tax, immigration, or medical advice. The variant is hands-on practice — booking, signing up, math — but every sub-block STOPS before the participant makes a real-world commitment in the room. They book at home. They submit at home. They file with VITA.

Route-out scripts to keep on the lectern (this topic has unusually high routing density):

If a participant asks for advice the route doesn't cover, default phrase: "这个我不能替您决定 — 让我帮您联系正确的人。" / "I can't make that call for you — let me connect you with the right person."

14 · Flashcards & Activities ·

There is a 6-card take-home deck for this workshop — vocabulary, a dialogue, a fact sheet, tips, useful info, and a diagram.

Print 打印: 打开卡片 Open the deck · 直接打印 Print now. Prints 2 cards per landscape sheet (3 sheets per deck). Print one deck per participant, plus 1–2 spare decks for games; cut along the dashed lines.

Hand them out at the close (§10) — the deck is the take-home companion to the written action plan.

Best-fit activities for THIS workshop (full menu of 8 at the flashcards page) ·

Pairs read the dialogue in both languages, switch roles, then swap in their own situation.
One partner explains the diagram in their own words; the other adds one thing.

Always close with · 收尾必做 — 带走一张 Keep One Card (whole deck 整套 · 2 min): each participant picks the ONE card most useful to them right now and tells a neighbor why.
