Workshop 03 — Job Search · Facilitator Lesson Plan
For: CSC office staff, case managers, bilingual volunteers You don't need to be an expert in job placement. You need to be a calm bilingual presence who can run this script and route hard questions to the right place (AJCC for work-authorization, CSC employment specialist for 1-on-1).
1 · At-a-Glance
| Workshop | 03 — Job Search /
| Duration | 30 min core + 10 min Q&A |
| Audience | 6–20 LEP Chinese adults, mostly 40+, looking for first or next job in LA |
| You'll need | Laptop, projector, WiFi, printed Quick Reference Card (section 12), bilingual sign-in sheet, ~20 copies of the resources handout, backup phone with workshop URL bookmarked, pens, water |
| Slides URL | https://job-search-workshop.pages.dev/ |
| Handout URL | https://job-search-workshop.pages.dev/resources |
2 · Learning Objectives
After this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Name two channels they will personally try this week (one online site + one community channel).
- Tell a friend, neighbor, or WeChat group in one sentence that they're looking for work, without losing face.
- List three things to prep before an interview (documents, dress, arrival time) and three phrases when English runs out.
- Identify CSC and one government workforce center (AJCC or EDD) as free next stops — and know which phone number to call first.
3 · Pre-Workshop Checklist (15 min before)
Tech
- Open
https://job-search-workshop.pages.dev/— arrow-key through to slide 13, confirm the QR code renders (it's drawn client-side; if it's blank, reload once) - Confirm the two interactive slides behave: slide 6 (reveal button) and slide 10 (two-phase reveal: Q1 → Q2)
- Reset to slide 1; bookmark the URL on your phone as backup — slides are cached offline by the service worker, so they'll still load if WiFi dies mid-session
- Test WiFi by loading
/resourcesfrom a phone
Materials
- ~20 printed resources handouts (
/resourcespage, prints clean viaprint.css); this Quick Reference Card (section 12) on the lectern - Sign-in sheet at door, pens at every seat — they'll write down phone numbers from slide 13
- Print backups of slides 3 / 7 / 13 in case the projector dies (see §9)
Room
- U-shape if group ≤ 12; rows if ≥ 13. Water available.
Yourself
- Skim this plan once (15 min); say the bilingual opening line aloud
- Look at Q&A — be ready for the top 3 (work authorization, age, WeChat scams)
4 · Audience Snapshot
Chinese-speaking adults aged 40–65, mostly San Gabriel Valley (Monterey Park, Alhambra, Rosemead). Many have already held jobs — restaurant, home health aide, factory, cashier, driver — and are between gigs, recently laid off, or trying to move out of under-the-table work. They've heard of Indeed but think it's "for young people with good English." They trust WeChat groups (微信群) and a neighbor's word over any website. They want one phone number and one thing to try tomorrow morning — not a philosophy.
5 · Cultural & Bilingual Tips
- Frame, not prescribe. Don't say "you NEED LinkedIn." Explain the system; let them choose.
- Reframe "networking." 人脉 sounds transactional in Mandarin. Frame it as "让认识您的人知道您在找工作" (letting the people who know you find out you're looking). Slides already use this softer framing — match it.
- The 70% donut is GOOD news, not a guilt trip. Many secretly think "我没人脉, 我找不到工作." The 70% flips this: the way most jobs are found is the way they ALREADY know — through people they know. They don't have to learn a new American system; they already live in one.
- Bilingual cadence. Chinese key term first, then English. Don't translate every sentence. One key phrase per slide.
- Face-saving on the "ask for leads" beat. Never say "你应该告诉别人你失业了." Say "告诉朋友您在找一份新工作" — "new job" sidesteps whether they were laid off, fired, or quit.
- NEVER give legal advice on work authorization. Route to AJCC. See Q1.
6 · Slide-by-Slide Script
Slide 1 · Title · ⏱ 1 min
— "Welcome. In 30 minutes: where to find jobs, how to prep for interviews, and how to use the people you already know."
POINT TO: The CSC name above the title — say the agency out loud.
Take 2–3 quick answers.
WATCH FOR: Silence. Wait 5 seconds. If still silence: "我希望大家走出去的时候,知道下一步可以打哪个电话。"
IF SHORT: Skip the ASK.
Slide 2 · Agenda · ⏱ 1 min
POINT TO: Each of the three agenda cards in order.
IF SHORT: 30 sec. Read three topics, advance.
Slide 3 · 70% Donut + 6 Channels · ⏱ 3 min
— "About 70% of jobs come through people you know, not online. Good news — you already know plenty of people."
POINT TO: The teal donut and the big 70%. Hold for a beat. Then sweep across the six cards below.
Take 3–4 answers. Most will say 朋友介绍 — validate out loud as the 70%.
WATCH FOR: The "knowing someone = corrupt" misconception (走后门). Referrals are normal in the US.
IF SHORT: Skip the ASK. Point to 70%, name 3 channels, advance.
70%?" — "If a friend asked you why job-finding in the US works this way, how would you explain the 70% in 30 seconds?" Take one teach-back answer; the act of explaining locks it in.
SCAFFOLD (beginner): Hold up three fingers, then seven. Say only "十个工作 — 七个是朋友介绍的。" Skip the donut math. The number sticks; the chart can wait.
Slide 4 · Online Job Boards · ⏱ 3 min
POINT TO: The tip under Indeed: "可搜中文工作 · Search in Chinese" — many don't know this works.
Show of hands; gauges digital comfort.
WATCH FOR: (1) "I have to pay" — no, all three are free. Say it twice. (2) LinkedIn intimidation, "I'm too old." Reframe: any age; CSC can help set up in 20 minutes.
IF SHORT: "Indeed 最大, CalJOBS 政府, 都免费." Advance.
Slide 5 · AJCC & EDD · ⏱ 2 min
Note: AJCC walk-in services don't check immigration status; specific WIOA-funded programs may.
POINT TO: Both AJCC locations on the card — East SGV (626) 934-5700 and Los Angeles 213-744-9753 — then EDD 1-800-300-5616 · 中文按 2. Tell SGV participants the East SGV office is closest (Monterey Park / Alhambra / Rosemead area).
WATCH FOR: "EDD 等了两个小时" — acknowledge; phones are slow. AJCC walk-in is usually faster.
IF SHORT: Point to two phone numbers. "记下这两个电话。"
Slide 6 · Activity: Match the Source · ⏱ 3 min
POINT TO: The scenario text. Do NOT click reveal yet.
Pair-share 60 seconds. Then click Reveal: 亲友介绍 / Word of Mouth.
WATCH FOR: Some overthink and say "招聘会" or "网上." Use this to make the 70% concrete: it counts even when it's casual ("my friend mentioned").
IF SHORT: Skip pair-share. Ask the room, take one answer, reveal.
Slide 7 · Interview Prep — Before · ⏱ 3 min
POINT TO: The amber circle (step 3 — Interview) on the funnel. Then sweep down the 8-item checklist.
WATCH FOR: "References" confusion. Quickly clarify: former boss, former coworker, ESL teacher, pastor, community leader. NOT family members.
IF SHORT: Top 3 only — documents, dress, arrive 15 min early. The handout has all 8.
Slide 8 · Interview — During · ⏱ 2 min
POINT TO: Each Q&A pair, then the note block at the bottom — read aloud: "Sorry, could you please repeat that?" and "Please speak a little slower."
You want them to repeat one of the two phrases — coach them.
WATCH FOR: Embarrassment about English.
IF SHORT: Read three Qs + two recovery phrases. Skip the ASK.
— "If the interviewer asks 'what's your biggest weakness?' — how do you answer?" Coach toward a real-then-recover pattern ("I used to X, now I do Y") rather than a fake-humble dodge. 60 sec max.
SCAFFOLD (beginner): "Repeat after me — chorus, all together." Lead the room in saying both phrases aloud, twice:
"Sorry, could you please repeat that?" "Please speak a little slower."
Saying them in chorus removes solo-speaking fear and locks in the muscle memory.
Slide 9 · Interview — After · ⏱ 2 min
POINT TO: The 24-hour line and the 5–7 business-days follow-up window.
WATCH FOR: "我英语不好,不会写感谢信." Reassure: one sentence is enough. "Thank you for your time today. I am very interested in the position." That's it. CSC can help draft it.
Thank you. I'm interested." Advance.
Slide 10 · True/False Quiz · ⏱ 3 min (both Qs)
Count. "觉得错的请举手." Count. Click Reveal Q1.
After Q1: "错。 很多工作不需要完美英语。慢慢说、请对方重复都可以。" Advance to Q2.
Same vote → Reveal → FALSE. Dress neatly. First impressions count.
WATCH FOR: People who don't vote because they're unsure. Also — don't accidentally advance the slide on the second click. The second click reveals Q2; it does NOT go to the next slide. Same multi-phase pattern as Workshop 02 Slide 9 — keep your finger off the right-arrow until both reveals are done.
IF SHORT: Q1 only. Skip Q2.
STRETCH (advanced): After both reveals, ask: "如果您身边有人也想来面试,您怎么用一句话告诉他这两个误区?" — "If a friend was about to interview, how would you warn them about these two myths in one sentence?" Quick teach-back; reinforces the takeaway.
SCAFFOLD (beginner): Skip the "对还是错" vote — instead, hold up your own hand for "对" and the room follows. Reveal immediately. Reading + voting + English-translating all at once is too much load; just read it together.
Slide 11 · Networking — Community · ⏱ 3 min
POINT TO: Sweep across the six cards — 亲友介绍 · 微信群 · 宗教社区 · 同乡会 · 招聘会 · 义工活动. Land on 微信群 ("您手机里的微信群,就是一个找工作的地方") and 宗教社区 (often overlooked — 教会、佛堂、寺庙 all count). Mention 同乡会 by name for SGV — 台山同乡会、福州同乡会、华联会 are real on-ramps for newer arrivals.
Most have 5–20. More reach than they realize.
TEACH the one-line ask (the workshop's most important 60 seconds). Say it yourself, then have ONE participant repeat it:
"我现在在找一份新的工作,如果您听到合适的,请告诉我。谢谢!" "I'm looking for a new job. If you hear of anything that fits, please let me know. Thank you!"
WeChat scam warning: "微信群里的工作要小心 — 不要给钱、不要给社安号、不要先付'押金'." Real employers don't ask you to pay them.
IF SHORT: Skip the practice line. Point to cards, say "告诉三个人," advance.
— "Of your WeChat groups, which one fits best for this message? Why that one, not the others?" Surfaces the read-the-room instinct (老乡群 vs 教会群 vs 家长群) and primes them to actually post tonight.
SCAFFOLD (beginner): Have the WHOLE room say the one-line ask in chorus, twice, slowly. Then have one volunteer say it solo. Don't single out a quiet participant — wait for a hand. The chorus removes the spotlight; the solo locks it in.
Slide 12 · CSC Services · ⏱ 2 min
POINT TO: Each of the 5 items. End on 213-808-1758 · cscla.org.
WATCH FOR: Confusion that this is a sales pitch. Twice.
Advance.
Slide 13 · Resources + QR · ⏱ 2 min
POINT TO: The QR code and URL. Then read each phone number on the three resource cards aloud — tell them to write the numbers down.
Take 2–3 answers as you close.
WATCH FOR: People who linger. They have a private question. Stay 5 extra minutes.
IF SHORT: Point to QR, read CSC's number, close.
7 · Interactive Moments
| Slide | Type | Time | Prompt | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | Open Q | 1 min | "您上一份工作怎么找到的?" | Validate "friend referral" as the 70%. |
| 6 | Pair-share | 2 min | "这是哪种求职方式?" | Right answer: word of mouth / 亲友介绍. |
| 7 | Hands | 30 sec | "明天面试,都准备好了吗?" | Most won't have references — flag the gap. |
| 8 | Recall | 30 sec | "听不清,您怎么说?" | Coach to "Could you repeat that?" |
| 10 | Vote + reveal ×2 | 3 min | Q1 perfect English / Q2 jeans | Both FALSE. |
| 11 | Practice line | 60 sec | "我在找一份新工作…" | Most important 60 sec — have one participant repeat it. |
| 12 | Hands | 30 sec | "Want a 1-on-1?" | Sign up after close. |
| 13 | Reflection | 60 sec | "您的下一步, 一件事就好" | Take 2–3 answers as you close. |
8 · Common Participant Questions
Rule: Never give legal, tax, immigration, or medical advice. Always route to a named resource.
Can I work without an SSN?
Route to: AJCC East SGV — (626) 934-5700. Do NOT speculate on ITIN, DACA, or status pathways.
Route to: CSC 1-on-1 resume help — 213-808-1758.
Route to: CSC employment specialist — 213-808-1758.
Could you repeat that?' / 'Please speak slower.' / 'I didn't catch that.' CSC 有免费面试练习,一对一陪您练。" Route to: 213-808-1758 to book a mock interview.
Route to: CSC — 213-808-1758.
Route to: CSC 213-808-1758 or AJCC (626) 934-5700.
Route to: CA Labor Commissioner 1-833-526-4636 or Bet Tzedek (323) 939-0506. See Workshop 02.
Route to: 213-808-1758.
Hi, are you hiring? I have experience in [server / cashier / kitchen].' 就算今天没招人,他们记得您 — 一两周后可能就有空缺。" Route to: No agency needed for walk-in itself; CSC can role-play the door-knock at 213-808-1758.
Route to: AJCC (626) 934-5700 for work-authorization questions; CA Labor Commissioner 1-833-526-4636 for unpaid wages; see Workshop 02.
9 · Recovery Plans
Internet fails: Use the printed handout (resources page is the most important). Slides work offline. Skip the QR demo on slide 13 — read the URL aloud and have everyone write it on their handout.
Only 3 people show up: Sit in a circle. Run as conversation. Skip the pair-share on slide 6; do it as group. Skip the vote on slide 10; discuss instead. Spend the saved time on Q&A.
25+ people show up: Clusters of 4. Use the mic. For pair-share on slide 6, give a 60-sec signal so the room doesn't drift. Stay at the door 5 extra minutes — you'll get private questions about status and wage theft.
Group is silent: Wait 7 full seconds before re-asking. Re-ask with "如果有人…" framing — removes personal exposure. Share your own answer to model the length.
Walk physically toward another part of the room.
Running long (>5 min over at halfway): Cut slide 7 to top 3 items. Do Q1 only on slide 10. Skip the practice line on slide 11.
Projector / display dies: Print slides 3 (the 70% donut + 6 channels), 7 (interview checklist), and 13 (resources + phone numbers) before each session — walk the printouts around the table. Read the headline + key number aloud; skip visual-dependent slides (2, 6, 10) or run them as voice-only.
If you finish early (5 / 10 / 15 min spare):
Don't default to "any questions?" — the room will go quiet and you'll lose the energy you just built. Run one of these instead, matched to your spare-time budget.
"In one word — what's the one thing you most want to do? A phone call? A person? A website?" Take 8–10 quick answers. Reinforces the "one next step" close from slide 13 without dragging.
- 10 min spare — Three-Person Practice (see §13 for the full activity). Each participant writes three names on the back of the handout and rehearses the one-line ask from slide 11 with a neighbor.
- 15 min spare — Use the Finish-Early Extension in §13 in full (Setup + Activity + Debrief). It's designed to land in 10 min and leaves 5 min for a clean close.
If a question goes runaway long:
- "好问题。让我先记下来,我们在 1-on-1 / 资源页面里看更深。" — "Good question. Let me write it down — we'll go deeper in 1-on-1 / on the resource page."
- Write it visibly on a whiteboard or paper "parking lot." Move on.
Question you don't know: "好问题。这个我不能随便答,我跟同事确认一下再联系您。" Write it down + route to AJCC / Bet Tzedek / CSC for next staff sync. Never speculate on status, tax, or legal questions.
10 · Closing & Next Steps (last 5 min)
Translation: "Three things: 1) 70% of jobs come from people you know — tell three people. 2) Three prep items: ID + neat clothes + arrive 15 min early. 3) CSC helps free — call 213-808-1758. Next: take the handout, scan QR, see me for a 1-on-1."
Hand out: Resources handout. Point to QR and CSC contact info on the first page.
Send them to:
https://job-search-workshop.pages.dev/resources- AJCC East SGV walk-in: (626) 934-5700 — work-authorization questions, ESL, job fairs
- CSC 1-on-1: 213-808-1758 — resume, mock interview, employer referrals
- Workshop 02 (Worker Rights): if they have wage-theft or labor questions
11 · Post-Workshop Tasks (within 24 hours)
- Save sign-in sheet (scan or photo)
- Note attendance + brief mood in the workshop log
- WeChat message to participants who shared contact: slides URL + resources URL
- Book every 1-on-1 sign-up within 48 hours
- Confirm any work-authorization question was routed to AJCC, no personal opinion given
- Questions you couldn't answer → next staff sync
- Slide confusion feedback → flag for next audit
12 · Quick Reference Card (print this page)
Workshop 03 — Job Search · 30 min
Agenda strip:
- (1–2) Welcome + agenda — 2 min
- (3–5) Channels + online sites + workforce centers — 8 min
- (6) Activity: match the source — 3 min
- (7–9) Interview: before / during / after — 7 min
- (10) True/False quiz — 3 min
- (11–12) Community + CSC services — 5 min
- (13) Resources + QR + close — 2 min
If running long: cut slide 7 to top 3 items first, then Q2 on slide 10, then the practice-line repeat on slide 11; convert pair-shares to "think 30 sec + raise hand."
If you finish early:
- 5 min spare → round-the-room one-word check ("一个词:今天您最想做的一件事")
- 10 min spare → §13 Three-Person Practice + one-line ask rehearsal
- 15+ min spare → §13 Finish-Early Extension in full; 20+ min → start §13 Sub-block 1 (live WeChat phone-out)
Top 5 questions you'll get:
- 没有 SSN 能工作吗? → AJCC (626) 934-5700 (do NOT give legal advice)
→ Yes; CA protects 40+; CSC resume help
→ Some scams. Red flags: pay money / SSN upfront / "guaranteed"
→ "Could you repeat that?" + CSC free mock interview
CA Labor Commissioner 1-833-526-4636 (Workshop 02)
Emergency phrases:
- No answer: "好问题。我跟同事确认一下,再联系您。"
- Out of scope: "这个问题最好问 [AJCC / Bet Tzedek / CSC]。我可以帮您联系。"
Three numbers to know cold:
- 70% of jobs come through people you know
- CSC: 213-808-1758 — free resume, mock interview, referrals
- AJCC East SGV: (626) 934-5700 — free, multilingual, walk-in
The one-line ask (slide 11):
"我现在在找一份新的工作,如果您听到合适的,请告诉我。谢谢!"
WeChat scam red flags: pay money / SSN upfront / "guaranteed hire" → SCAM.
If something breaks:
- WiFi out → handouts + phone (slides cached offline)
- Projector dies → print slides 3, 7, 13 and walk them around
- Question I can't answer → "我跟同事确认,联系您." + write it down + route (AJCC / Bet Tzedek / CSC)
13 · 60-Minute Variant (when you have a full hour)
Use this when: Your slot is 60 minutes instead of 30+10, OR you finish the core 30-min teach with significant time remaining, OR the room asks for hands-on practice. The variant ADDS 30 min of applied work after the 30-min core — it does NOT re-run the same slides.
Don't lecture longer. The 30-min core is calibrated to LEP-adult attention. Extra time goes to PRACTICE — specifically, getting the one-line ask out of their head and into someone's hand or WeChat group before they leave the room.
Finish-Early Extension (10 min — drop in after Slide 11 or right before close)
Activity: Three-Person Practice. Each participant names three real people they will tell this week — then rehearses the one-line ask out loud with a neighbor. Surfaces the people-they-already-know graph and gets the line said in a low-stakes voice before they leave.
— "Flip your handout over. Write three names — three people you already know who you could tell this week. Don't filter for 'important' — just write." Hand out pens if needed. Examples to seed: a neighbor, a 微信群 admin, a 教会 / 佛堂 friend, a former coworker, a 同乡会 contact, your kid's classmate's parent.
- Activity (7 min): - 0:00–2:00 — Participants write three names silently. Walk the room. If someone is stuck, whisper: "随便一个名字 — 比如住您隔壁的那位。" / "Any name — your next-door neighbor counts." - 2:00–6:00 — Pair them up (with the person to their right). Each partner says the one-line ask aloud to the other, naming the first person on their list: "[Name],我现在在找一份新的工作,如果您听到合适的,请告诉我。谢谢!" Partner coaches on tone — too apologetic? Too formal? Just right? Swap. Each person gets two turns. - 6:00–7:00 — Facilitator collects names visibly (clipboard or tally on whiteboard): "今天这屋子里,大家加起来一共要告诉__个人。" Total it out loud. Creates gentle social accountability — they came up with the number, you just summed it.
Take one strong example (specific person, clear reason) + one stretch example (the person they almost didn't write down). / "Before tonight — just tell ONE person. Not three. One." Lowers the activation energy.
60-Minute Variant — Applied Block (30 min, added after Slide 11)
This block puts the workshop's three highest-leverage moves — the one-line ask, the walk-in, and the LinkedIn/CSC sign-up — into real action while the room is still warm. It comes AFTER slide 11 (where the one-line ask was taught) and BEFORE slide 12 (CSC services), so the CSC sign-up at slide 12 is concrete rather than abstract.
Time: 30 min (35 if you include the 5-min wrap below)
Materials added:
- Pens at every seat (already in §3, but double-check)
- A whiteboard or flip chart to tally "messages sent" and "1-on-1 sign-ups"
- The bilingual sign-in sheet at the door, marked with a column for "约 1-on-1?"
- One projector-ready WeChat or LinkedIn screen (your phone mirrored, or a generic example) for the worked example in Sub-block 1
- Optional: 3–5 redacted sample WeChat group screenshots showing the one-line ask in a real-looking group (scam-flag examples + a clean post)
Sub-block 1 — Live WeChat phone-out · ⏱ 10 min
The single highest-leverage 10 minutes in the variant. Goal: at least half the room posts the one-line ask in a real WeChat group before leaving.
- 0:00–2:00 — Facilitator worked example. Ask for ONE volunteer who has a WeChat group they trust Mirror their phone or your own; with their consent, draft the message together on the projector using their actual situation. Coach the tone live: too apologetic ("不好意思打扰大家…") → trim. Too generic ("有工作介绍吗?") → swap in the one-line ask. Don't post it yet. Show what the final message looks like.
- 2:00–7:00 — Room writes their own. "请大家打开手机,挑一个微信群 — 老乡群、教会群、家长群、前同事群,都可以。把那一句话打出来,但先不要发。" / "Open your phone. Pick ONE group — hometown, church, parents, former coworkers, any. Type the one-line ask, but DON'T send yet." Walk the room. Spot-check: tone, group choice (not the wrong audience), no SSN/cash/photo asks slipped in.
- 7:00–10:00 — Send + tally. "现在 — 想发的请发。不想发的就保存草稿,今天晚上之前发。" / "Now — if you're ready, send. If not, save it as a draft and send before tonight." Walk the room. For each participant who sends, mark a tally on the board. Land on "刚刚这屋子里,__条消息出去了。" / "Just now, __ messages went out of this room." Real number, real audience, real ask.
Boundary reminder for facilitator: Do NOT type, post, or send anything from a participant's phone yourself. They type, they hit send. You only coach.
Sub-block 2 — SGV walk-in role-play (一线 ask script) · ⏱ 10 min
Job-search-specific: SGV service-industry walk-ins are how a real chunk of restaurant / 99 大华 / 点心楼 / dim sum hall hiring happens, and they require an English script most participants don't have ready. This block builds it.
- 0:00–2:00 — Frame the walk-in. "在 SGV,蒙特利公园、阿罕布拉、罗斯密的中餐厅、99 大华超市、点心楼,很多时候不在网上招人 — 您走进去问就有机会。最好的时间是早上 10–11 点,或者下午 2–4 点,过了 lunch rush。" Tie back to Q9 in §8.
- 2:00–5:00 — Build the script together. On the whiteboard, write the four lines: > 1. "Hi, are you hiring?" > 2. "I have experience in [server / cashier / kitchen / cleaning]." > 3. "May I leave a resume?" (offer a printed copy) > 4. "May I speak to the manager / owner?" Say each line as a room chorus, twice. Then ask: "如果他们说 'not right now,' 您怎么回?" Coach toward: "Thank you. May I leave my resume anyway, in case something opens up?" Don't walk away empty-handed.
- 5:00–10:00 — Pair role-play. Pairs of two. Person A is the manager (says "not right now" or "we might be hiring in two weeks"). Person B walks through all four lines + the recovery line. Swap. Facilitator walks the room — listen for confidence, not perfect grammar. Praise the recovery line specifically: most people skip step 4 and just walk out.
Boundary reminder: No legal/immigration advice on what jobs they "can" take. The walk-in script is language practice, not a placement recommendation. Route any work-authorization question to AJCC (626) 934-5700 — Q1 in §8.
Sub-block 3 — LinkedIn 3-connection drill + on-the-spot CSC 1-on-1 sign-up · ⏱ 10 min
Closes the loop: each participant leaves with either a LinkedIn presence started OR a CSC 1-on-1 booked (often both). Concrete, bookable, no-homework-required.
- 0:00–4:00 — LinkedIn 3-connection drill. "LinkedIn 上,您只需要连三个人就够 — 不用一百个。" / "On LinkedIn you only need to connect with three people — not a hundred." Three categories: > 1. One former coworker > 2. One classmate / 同学 (any school, any country) > 3. One person at a company you want to work for Participants who already have LinkedIn: open the app and send three connection requests during this block. Use the message template: "Hi [Name], 我是 [Your Name]. 我们以前在 [where you knew them] 认识 — 想保持联系。" / "Hi [Name], I'm [Your Name]. We knew each other at [where] — would like to stay in touch." Participants who don't have LinkedIn: write the three names on the back of the handout — CSC will help them sign up in the 1-on-1.
- 4:00–8:00 — On-the-spot CSC 1-on-1 sign-up. "今天就在这里登记 1-on-1 — 不用回家再打电话,排队的人少,这周就能约到。" / "Sign up for the 1-on-1 right here, right now — fewer people in the queue, you'll get a slot this week." Pass the sign-in sheet (with the "约 1-on-1?" column) physically around the U-shape — not "raise your hand," but actually rotate the clipboard. Target: book 3–5 sign-ups on the spot.
- 8:00–10:00 — Quick tally + close prep. Read out: "今天屋子里,__条 WeChat 消息出去了,__个 1-on-1 约好了,__个人写了 LinkedIn 名单。" Three numbers, said aloud. Then advance to slide 12 (CSC Services) — the room is now primed to hear it as a service they're already using, not a sales pitch.
Close (5 min, optional — only if you have 65 min total): Round-robin one-line share from each participant: "今天回去,我会先做哪一件事?" / "When I go home tonight, what's the FIRST thing I'll do?" One sentence each, no debate. Closes with momentum.
When to use what — quick rules
| Spare time | Use |
|---|---|
| 0–5 min | Round-the-room one-word check (§9 "if you finish early") |
| 5–10 min | §13 Finish-Early Extension — Three-Person Practice |
| 10–20 min | §13 Sub-block 1 — live WeChat phone-out |
| 20–30 min | §13 Sub-blocks 1 + 2 (WeChat + SGV walk-in role-play) |
| 30+ min | Full 60-Min Variant (all 3 sub-blocks); add 5-min close |
Differentiation in the variant
- For advanced learners (some English, prior US job experience): Run the full 60-Min Variant as default. They benefit most from Sub-block 3 (LinkedIn) — most have heard of LinkedIn but never sent a connection request. Pair them with a beginner during Sub-block 2 so they coach the walk-in script.
- For mixed-proficiency rooms: Pair one stronger English speaker with one beginner during Sub-block 2 (walk-in role-play). The stronger speaker plays the manager (less pressure), the beginner gets to practice the script with a forgiving audience. Swap roles only if time allows.
- For beginner-heavy rooms (limited English, first US job hunt): Expand Sub-block 1 (WeChat — entirely in Chinese, low-friction) to 15 min. Shrink Sub-block 2 to 5 min: just chorus the four English lines together, skip the role-play. Skip Sub-block 3's LinkedIn entirely; spend that 10 min on CSC 1-on-1 sign-ups, walking the clipboard around personally.
Routing & boundary
Same rules as the 30-min core: no legal, tax, immigration, or medical advice. The variant's hands-on activities are language practice and outreach drafting — never decision-making on the participant's individual status, cash-work situation, or wage dispute. If a participant asks during Sub-block 1 or 2 whether their specific employer / WeChat post / walk-in target is "legitimate" or "OK for someone like me," answer the same way as §8 Q1 and Q10: route to AJCC (626) 934-5700 for work-authorization questions, CA Labor Commissioner 1-833-526-4636 for wage theft, CSC 213-808-1758 for 1-on-1 follow-up. Write the question down. Move on.
14 · Flashcards & Activities ·
There is a 6-card take-home deck for this workshop — vocabulary, a dialogue, a fact sheet, tips, useful info, and a diagram.
Print 打印: 打开卡片 Open the deck · 直接打印 Print now. Prints 2 cards per landscape sheet (3 sheets per deck). Print one deck per participant, plus 1–2 spare decks for games; cut along the dashed lines.
Hand them out at the close (§10) — the deck is the take-home companion to the written action plan.
Best-fit activities for THIS workshop (full menu of 8 at the flashcards page) ·
Pairs read the dialogue in both languages, switch roles, then swap in their own situation.
Facilitator reads true/false statements; hands up for true; check the fact card (same format as the slide-7 quiz).
Always close with · 收尾必做 — 带走一张 Keep One Card (whole deck 整套 · 2 min): each participant picks the ONE card most useful to them right now and tells a neighbor why.
