Workshop 02 — Resume Writing · Facilitator Lesson Plan
For: CSC office staff, case managers, bilingual volunteers You don't need to be an expert. Be a calm bilingual presence, walk participants to the Builder QR, route hard questions (citizenship, work-auth) to AJCC. Most participants leave with a one-page printable resume — that's the win.
1 · At-a-Glance
| Workshop | 02 — Resume Writing /
| Duration | 30 min core + 10 min Q&A / Builder demo |
| Audience | 6–20 LEP Chinese adults, 40+, intermediate ESL, Traditional-Chinese readers |
| You'll need | Laptop, projector, WiFi, printer, Quick Reference Card (section 12), bilingual sign-in sheet, ~20 printed Worksheets, pens, water, backup phone with URL bookmarked |
| Slides | https://resume-workshop.pages.dev/ |
| Builder | https://resume-workshop.pages.dev/builder (6-step wizard → printable resume) |
| Worksheet | https://resume-workshop.pages.dev/worksheet (paper backup) |
| Resources | Slide 11 of the deck — no separate resources page |
2 · Learning Objectives
After this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Name the 5 sections every US resume needs (Contact, Objective, Work, Skills, Education) plus optional Volunteer Work.
- Rewrite a vague bullet ("Was responsible for customers") into action-verb + number ("Served 50+ customers daily").
- Identify what to LEAVE OUT (photo, age, birthdate, SSN, nationality) — the US norm, not a judgment.
- Start the online Builder on their phone OR take home a paper Worksheet, and know they can return to CSC for 1-on-1 help.
3 · Pre-Workshop Checklist (15 min before start)
Tech
- Open slides at
https://resume-workshop.pages.dev/— testEN / 中文toggle (top-right) - Set language to 中文 by default
- Open the Builder in a second browser tab — switch to it live on Slide 9
- Test the printer with a dummy Builder resume (Step 1 → Step 7 → Print). Know your fallback.
- Confirm the Slide 9 QR is sharp from the back row
- Bookmark slides URL on your phone (works offline via service worker)
Materials
- Print ~20 copies of the Worksheet at
/worksheet - Print 3–5 sample Builder outputs to pass around
- Print this Quick Reference Card (section 12)
- Bilingual sign-in sheet at door; pens at every seat
Room
- U-shape ≤12; rows ≥13. Phone-charging strip near front if you have one.
Yourself
- Skim this plan once
- Walk the Builder once yourself (Step 1 → Step 7) so you know what they'll see
- Be ready for the top 3 Q&A (ITIN, gap years, Chinese degrees)
4 · Audience Snapshot
6–20 Chinese-speaking adults from Alhambra, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, Chinatown. Mostly 45–65, in the US 10–20 years, looking for restaurant, retail, warehouse, home-care, hotel, or 99 Ranch / supermarket work. Many never wrote a US-style resume — in China and Taiwan the norm is a one-pager with photo, birthdate, and ID. They are NOT confused about work — they have decades of it. They're confused about how to package it for an American employer who'll glance for 6–10 seconds.
5 · Cultural & Bilingual Tips
- Frame, not prescribe. Don't say "you SHOULD have a resume." Explain the system, don't grade.
- The photo/birthdate moment (Slide 4). In China/Taiwan, photo + birthdate are normal and polite. Don't say "that's wrong."
- Bilingual cadence. Traditional Chinese first. Chinese, then English, then point. Translate ONE key phrase per slide, not every sentence.
- Gap years (face-saving). Never ask "who has a gap?" Many women in the room spent 5–15 years caregiving. Use "如果有人有一段時間在家照顧家人…" framing. Caregiving counts — frame as "家庭照護" on Volunteer/Experience, or leave the gap silent. Don't lie, don't apologize.
- Chinese/Taiwan degrees. Write school name + degree + city + country. Don't translate into "equivalent." For professional licensing (nurse, teacher), WES later — but the resume itself doesn't need a WES stamp.
6 · Slide-by-Slide Script
SAY = say close to verbatim. POINT TO = finger on the visual. ASK = real question. WATCH FOR = common confusion. IF SHORT = trim card. Budgets sum to ~30 min.
Slide 1 · What Is a Resume? · ⏱ 2 min
— "Welcome. In 30 minutes we'll send you home with a resume."
POINT TO: The four bullets (Who you are · Work · Skills · Education).
Take 2–3 quick answers.
WATCH FOR: "我沒有經驗."
IF SHORT: Skip the ASK.
Slide 2 · Why Your Resume Matters · ⏱ 2 min
(let them guess.) "六到十秒." Tap the big number.
POINT TO: The 6–10 sec big-stat hero. Let it land.
Likely: name, last job, skills.
WATCH FOR: Disbelief — "只有六秒?"
IF SHORT: Say the number, advance.
Slide 3 · The 5 Sections Every Resume Needs · ⏱ 3 min
POINT TO: Each of the 5 cards, then the "+ Volunteer Work" line.
Usually #3 (Work) or #2 (Objective). Bridge to next slides.
WATCH FOR: Participants reading only the Chinese. Fine — the grid stacks both on purpose.
IF SHORT: Read all 5 cards quickly, advance.
Slide 4 · Contact Information · ⏱ 3 min
POINT TO: Green Include items (name, phone, email, City/State). Then red Do-NOT-include items (SSN, birthdate, photo/nationality). Tap each.
Most will nod.
WATCH FOR: "那他怎麼知道我是誰?"
IF SHORT: Point to the red box: "在美國不放這些 — 法律和習慣." Advance.
Confirm — none of those go on a US resume.)
SCAFFOLD (beginner): Don't quiz on the red box. Point only to green ✓ items, hold up four fingers: "Name. Phone. Email. City." Have them repeat the four words. That's enough for Slide 4.
Slide 5 · Work Experience — Writing Bullets · ⏱ 4 min
POINT TO: Red box, then green box, then the action-verb row at the bottom.
Take 2–3 examples and rephrase aloud.
WATCH FOR: Small honest numbers ("每天 50 個碗"). Don't correct — small honest beats big lies.
IF SHORT: Read both boxes + action-verb row, advance.
(Take 1 only. Rephrase aloud, name the verb + number for the room.)
SCAFFOLD (beginner): Don't ask them to invent a bullet on the spot. Read the green example aloud, have the room repeat after you: "每日 — 服務 — 五十 — 位 — 顧客." Move on. They'll get a second chance on Slide 8 and a third in the Builder.
Slide 6 · Skills & Education · ⏱ 2 min
POINT TO: The skills row, then the four education bullets.
Everyone says yes.
WATCH FOR: "我只上過高中,這也算嗎?" Yes — high school diploma or GED counts.
IF SHORT: Read both rows, advance.
Slide 7 · Common Mistakes · ⏱ 2 min
Read each ✗ in Chinese.
POINT TO: Each of the six ✗ items as you read.
Common: "一份履歷用所有工作" or "不專業 email."
WATCH FOR: The "lying/exaggerating" line. Read it and move on. Don't moralize.
IF SHORT: Read only the top 3 (typos · same resume · photo). Advance.
Slide 8 · Good vs. Bad Resume Bullets · ⏱ 3 min
POINT TO: Top pair first, work down all four pairs. Tap each green ✓.
Wait for "動詞 + 數字" — if silence, say it yourself.
WATCH FOR: Participants copying the green examples.
IF SHORT: Top pair only, then "see the pattern? verb + number." Advance.
(E.g., "操作收銀機,每日 1,000+ 美元" → "操作堆高機,每日搬運 50+ 棧板." Same pattern, new industry. This tests pattern-transfer, not memorization.)
SCAFFOLD (beginner): Skip the pattern-spotting ASK. Read each green bullet aloud slowly. After each, hold up two fingers: "一、動詞. 二、數字." Don't expect a chorus reply — just plant the pattern through repetition.
Slide 9 · Open the Resume Builder · ⏱ 6 min · INTERACTIVE
Wait 30 sec.
POINT TO: The QR code. Then hold up a paper Worksheet.
Help anyone stuck — walk over, point camera at QR.
LIVE DEMO (if projector + WiFi OK): Switch to the Builder tab. Fill Step 1 with fake "Wang Mei / 王美, 626-555-0100, Alhambra, CA." Click Next. Show Step 2 (Objective — "可選"). Skip to Step 7 (Preview & Print). Don't actually print unless time + printer ready.
WATCH FOR:
- Can't scan → walk Step 1 live on the projector.
- Chinese names → "Li Wei / 李威" placeholder shows both work.
- No camera / no data → paper Worksheet, no internet needed.
IF SHORT: Skip the demo. "回家自己填,有問題打 CSC 電話." Advance.
STRETCH (advanced): Once they've scanned, "Builder 第二步 — 求職目標 (Objective). 一句話寫您要找什麼工作 + 一個您最強的點. 例如:'尋找零售或客服職位,能運用十年餐廳服務經驗與中英雙語能力.' 試一下." (Objective is optional and often skipped — advanced learners can use this slide to actually draft one.)
SCAFFOLD (beginner): Don't push the phone. Walk a paper Worksheet to anyone who looks unsure — say "用紙的也一樣,回家慢慢寫. 有問題下禮拜來 CSC,免費幫您改." Pair them with a confident scanner nearby if seating allows. The win for this participant is leaving with a Worksheet in hand, not a filled Builder.
Slide 10 · Before You Submit · ⏱ 2 min
POINT TO: The five ✓ items, then the "免費資源" box.
All good.
WATCH FOR: "PDF 怎麼存?" — "Builder 第七步按 Print,選 'Save as PDF.' Worksheet 是紙本,可以拍照存圖片."
IF SHORT: Read the five tips, skip ASK. Advance.
Slide 11 · Where to Get More Help · ⏱ 1 min
POINT TO: The four resource cards. Tap CSC and AJCC.
Take 2–3 answers.
WATCH FOR: People who linger — private questions (citizenship, ITIN, specific applications). Stay 5 extra minutes.
IF SHORT: "Take a worksheet. Call us. 再見."
7 · Interactive Moments
| Slide | Type | Time | Prompt | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | Live rephrase | 2 min | "Think of one job. Give me one verb, one number." | You rephrase 2–3 jobs aloud into bullet form. |
| 8 | Pattern-spot | 1 min | "See the pattern? What does the strong bullet have?" | Verb + number. Say it yourself if silence. |
| 9 | Phone + Builder demo | 6 min | "Take out your phone. Scan the QR. Or grab a paper Worksheet." | Every participant has Builder open OR Worksheet in hand by end. |
| 11 | Next-step ask | 1 min | "What's your one next step? One sentence." | Real answers from 2–3. Anchors the close. |
8 · Common Participant Questions (Q&A Anchor)
Rule: No legal, tax, immigration, or medical advice. Citizenship/work-auth → AJCC. Tax/ITIN-employment → VITA.
Q1: ITIN/SSN on the resume?
Route to: AJCC (edd.ca.gov/jobs_and_training) for work-auth questions.
Q2: Gap years from caregiving? /
You say: "您決定。寫的話放「志願者經歷」或「工作經歷」,標題「家庭照護」(Family Caregiver),加幾條動詞 + 數字. 不寫的話年份會有空檔,這很常見,面試時直接說「在家照顧家人」就好,不需要道歉。" Route to: CSC 1-on-1 to help word the bullets.
Q3: Chinese/Taiwan degree? /
例如「National Taiwan University, B.A. in Accounting, Taipei, Taiwan, 1995」. 不要翻成 'equivalent' — 用原始名稱。專業評估 (護士、教師) 未來用 WES 認證,履歷本身不需要。" Route to: WES (wes.org); AJCC for sector licensing.
Q4: English not strong — Chinese resume OK? /
Route to: CSC ESL classes.
Q5: Restaurant job with no contract /
Route to: In scope — no referral.
Q6: Can't fit everything on one page /
Route to: CSC 1-on-1 to pick the 3 best jobs.
Q7: Print copies to carry around? /
Route to: CSC printer (free) or local library.
Q8: No work authorization yet — should I still write one? /
Route to: AJCC for work-auth pathways; CSC case manager for general immigration intake.
Q9: Tax-related — I file with ITIN, does that affect my resume?
Route to: VITA (irs.gov/vita or 211la.org for SGV sites).
9 · Recovery Plans
Internet fails: Run on paper Worksheets. Slides work offline (service worker) via the bookmark on your phone. Skip the live Builder demo on Slide 9. Pre-print 5–10 sample Builder resumes to pass around.
Printer dies: Skip "print live." Show Preview only. Say: "Builder → Print → 'Save as PDF' → email CSC,我們幫您印."
Only 3 show up: Circle. Skip the phone QR — fill the Builder on your projected laptop with one participant's real info (with consent) and print at end. More Q&A.
25+ show up: Clusters of 4. Mic. Slide 9: 5-min signal, second staffer walks the room for QR scans. Stay 10 extra min for private ITIN/gap-year/degree questions.
Group silent: Wait 7 full seconds before re-asking. Re-ask with "如果有人…" framing. Share your own: "我第一份美國履歷,把照片放上去了…"
Walk physically toward another part of the room.
Running long >5 min at halfway: Slides 5 and 8 — skip rephrasing, read bullets. Slide 9 — skip demo, point to QR + Worksheet stack.
If you finish early (5 / 10 / 15 min spare):
Don't default to "還有問題嗎?" — silence will eat the time and the room will quietly drift to phones. Run one of these activities matched to your spare-time budget.
- 5 min spare — Round-the-room one-word check: "用一個詞 — 您今天學到最重要的一件事是什麼?" / "In one word — what's the single most important thing you learned today?" Take 8–10 quick answers. Common words: "動詞," "數字," "六秒," "不放照片," "一頁." Don't analyze — let it close the loop.
- 10 min spare — Bullet peer-review pair-share. Pairs swap Worksheets (or hold phone Builder screens side by side) and check each other's Work Experience bullets for the 動詞 + 數字 pattern. You circulate, pick 1–2 weak bullets, rephrase aloud as a group teach-back. Full activity script in §13 ("Finish-Early Extension").
- 15 min spare — Use the first sub-block of the 60-Min Variant (see §13). Sub-block 1 is Builder Step 1 (Contact) live in the room — stands on its own and gives every participant a finished section to take home.
If a question goes runaway long:
- "好問題。讓我先記下來,1-on-1 或資源頁面我們再看深一點。" — "Good question. Let me note it down — we'll go deeper in 1-on-1 or on the resources page."
- Write it on the whiteboard or a paper "parking lot." Move on. After the workshop, route work-auth → AJCC; ITIN/tax → VITA; credential evaluation → WES.
10 · Closing & Next Steps (last 5 min)
Translation: "Three things to remember: 1) 5 sections. 2) Work bullets = verbs + numbers — not 'was responsible for' but 'served 50 customers.' 3) US resumes don't include photo, birthdate, SSN — rule, not judgment. Next: take a Worksheet, scan the QR for the Builder, see me after for a 1-on-1."
Hand out: Paper Worksheet. Point to the QR.
Send them to:
/builder— 6-step wizard, mobile-friendly, prints clean/worksheet— paper backup- CSC office — free 1-on-1 resume review
- AJCC (
edd.ca.gov/jobs_and_training) — work-auth + sector-licensing questions
11 · Post-Workshop Tasks (within 24 hours)
- Save the sign-in sheet (scan/photograph)
- Note attendance + brief mood in the workshop log
- Tally how many opened the Builder vs. took only the Worksheet
- WeChat "thank you" to any participant who shared contact — include slides, Builder, Worksheet URLs
- Note any ITIN / work-auth / credential questions for the next staff sync (these need AJCC referral)
- Flag any slide that caused confusion for the next audit pass
- If anyone left a Worksheet behind — recycle (PII risk)
12 · Quick Reference Card (print this page)
One sheet. Clipboard. Lectern.
Workshop 02 — Resume Writing · 30 min
Agenda:
- (slide 1–2) Hook + 6-second stat — 4 min
- (slide 3–6) 5 sections + Contact/Experience/Skills/Education — 12 min
- (slide 7–8) Mistakes + good vs bad bullets — 5 min
- (slide 9) QR + Builder/Worksheet activity — 6 min
- (slide 10–11) Final tips + close — 3 min
If running long: Cut Slide 5/8 rephrasing first; convert pair-shares to "想 30 秒,有想法的舉手." Skip Slide 9 live demo — point to QR + Worksheet stack.
If you finish early:
- 5 min spare → round-the-room one-word check ("動詞? 數字? 六秒?")
- 10 min spare → §13 bullet peer-review pair-share (動詞 + 數字 check)
- 15+ min spare → §13 Sub-block 1: Builder Step 1 (Contact) live in the room
Top 5 Qs:
- ITIN/SSN on resume? → Neither, ever. Work-auth → AJCC.
- Caregiving gap years? → Optional "Family Caregiver" entry, or leave silent.
- Chinese/Taiwan degree? → Original name + city + country. WES later if professional.
- English weak — Chinese resume OK? → Bilingual fine in Chinatown; recommend one English version.
- No contract for old restaurant job? → No proof needed on resume. Honest dates win.
Emergency phrases:
- No answer: "好問題。我跟同事確認,再聯繫您."
- Out of scope: "這個問題最好問 AJCC / WES / 律師. 我可以幫您聯繫."
- Photo/birthdate moment: "在中國台灣很常見;在美國,法律規定雇主不能根據年齡決定,所以不放,反而保護您."
Numbers cold:
- 6–10 sec — employer scan time
- 1 page — US standard (Builder caps at 3 jobs)
- 5 sections — Contact, Objective, Work, Skills, Education (+ Volunteer optional)
If something breaks:
- WiFi out → paper Worksheet + phone-cached slides
- Projector dies → walk printed sample resumes around
- Printer dies → "save as PDF" → email CSC → we print later
- Can't answer → "我跟同事確認,聯繫您." + write it down
- Work-auth/citizenship → AJCC, every time
13 · 60-Minute Variant (when you have a full hour)
Use this when: Your slot is 60 minutes instead of 30+10, OR you finish the 30-min core with 15+ min still on the clock, OR the room is asking "可以現在就填嗎?" The variant ADDS 30 min of applied work AFTER the 30-min core — it does NOT re-run the slides. The job stops being "explain a resume" and becomes "every participant walks out with at least Contact + one real Work Experience entry done."
Don't lecture longer. Slides 1–8 are calibrated for LEP-adult attention. The extra time belongs to the Builder, the Worksheet, and your pen circling tables.
Finish-Early Extension (10 min — drop in after Slide 9 or before Slide 11 close)
Activity: Bullet peer-review pair-share — participants check each other's Work Experience bullets for the 動詞 + 數字 pattern. This is the lesson's single most important pattern (Slides 5 and 8); 10 minutes of peer reading drives it home harder than any slide could.
Pair people sitting next to each other; if odd number, make one group of 3. If pairs don't share a language comfort level (one Mandarin-only, one with stronger English), pair the stronger speaker with someone less sure — peer scaffolding works here.
- You circulate. Listen for 1–2 weak bullets ("負責客戶服務," "在餐廳幫忙"). Don't correct in private — collect them for the debrief. - If a pair finishes early: "再看一遍 — 哪一條最強?圈起來."
- Debrief (2 min): Pick the 1–2 weak bullets you heard. Put them on the projector (rewrite on paper if no projector). Rephrase aloud as a group teach-back. One strong example: e.g., "負責收銀" → "操作收銀機,每日處理逾 1,000 美元交易." One stretch example: e.g., "幫忙家裡帶孩子" → "Family Caregiver — 五年照顧 3 名學齡前兒童,安排接送、餐食、活動."
60-Minute Variant — Applied Block (30 min, added after Slide 9)
This is the heart of the 60-min version. Instead of moving on to Slide 10, you slow down at Slide 9 and let every participant actually complete two Builder steps in the room, with you walking the projector through a real worked example and spot-checking tables.
Time: 30 min (35 if you include the optional 5-min wrap)
Materials added:
- ~20 extra printed Worksheets (in case people prefer paper over phone mid-block — happens often)
- 5 printed sample Builder outputs (different industries: home-care, restaurant, retail, warehouse, bilingual office — pass around for visual reference)
- 1 redacted volunteer participant's real prior job, written on the whiteboard or projected (with explicit consent — ask before the workshop starts, not mid-block)
- Power strip near the front of the room if anyone's phone is low
Sub-block 1 — Builder Step 1 (Contact) live · ⏱ 10 min
The goal: every participant has Name, Phone, Email, City/State filled in — on phone OR paper — by minute 10.
Project Step 1 on screen. Type a fake name slowly: "Wang Mei / 王美."
- (2–6 min) Each field, one at a time, with you waiting. Pause 30 sec — if anyone needs help building a professional email, pair them with a neighbor. City/State: "Alhambra, CA — 不要寫詳細地址,街名也不寫."
- (6–9 min) Spot-check round. Walk the room. Tap each participant's screen / Worksheet. Look for: real name (not initials), valid 10-digit phone, no SSN/ITIN/birthdate snuck in, no photo upload. If you see any red flags from Slide 4 — say it once, quiet: "這一格不要寫."
Take 1–2 quick questions. Don't go deep — Sub-block 2 starts.
Sub-block 2 — Builder Step 3 (one Work Experience entry) live · ⏱ 10 min
The goal: every participant has ONE job typed in with at least two bullets using 動詞 + 數字.
Project the form. Type the volunteer's real job (if you got consent earlier — e.g., "Pacific Star Restaurant, Server, 2018–2023"). If no volunteer, use a fictional but realistic one: "Happy Garden Restaurant, Server, Alhambra, CA, 2019–2024."
- (3–7 min) Write 2 bullets together, live. Say the weak version first: "我會寫: '在餐廳服務客人.' 弱。為什麼?沒有動詞 — '服務' 算,但太普通。沒有數字。" Then strengthen, out loud: "改成 — '每日服務 60+ 位顧客,五年無投訴.' 動詞:服務。數字:60+ 位,五年。" Type it. Then a second bullet: "處理現金與信用卡交易,每班 1,500+ 美元,零誤差." "兩條夠了。雇主用六秒看 — 看到動詞和數字就停下來。"
- (7–10 min) "現在輪到您。寫兩條 — 您自己最近的工作,動詞 + 數字。" Walk the room. When you see someone stuck, sit down next to them for 30 sec. Don't write it for them — ask: "您每天做幾個 [碗 / 客人 / 個案 / 件貨]?" Let them say the number, you nod, they type. If someone genuinely cannot recall a number, "very many" → "many daily" → "served many daily" is acceptable. Honest small numbers always beat invented big ones.
Sub-block 3 — Print or Save, then 1-on-1 spot-check · ⏱ 10 min
The goal: every participant either has a printed page in hand OR a PDF saved on their phone OR a finished Worksheet, AND you've personally looked at every person's bullets at least once.
- (0–3 min) Demo on projector: Builder → Step 7 (Preview & Print) → "Save as PDF" (laptop) or "分享 → 儲存到檔案" (phone). Show what the printed page looks like. "您今天不需要全部填完 — Step 1 和 Step 3 已經是最重要的兩步."
- (3–8 min) Table-by-table spot-check. Walk to every table or seat. 30 sec per person max. Look at the screen / Worksheet. Read one bullet aloud. If it has 動詞 + 數字 — "好。下一個." If it doesn't — "這裡加一個數字: 幾個顧客?幾班?幾年?" Don't fix in private; fix in 10 seconds and move on. If anyone has a hard structural question (gap, credential, work-auth), say: "好問題。我寫下來,下課後我們一對一看." Parking lot — don't slow the room.
Close (5 min, optional — use if you have 65 min total):
Round-robin: each participant says ONE sentence — "這禮拜我會做什麼." Examples to expect: "我會把另外兩份工作寫好," "我會打電話約 1-on-1," "我會給女兒看,幫我校對," "我會印 5 份帶到 99 大華." Take everyone, fast — 15 sec each. No corrections, no follow-ups.
When to use what — quick rules
| Spare time | Use |
|---|---|
| 0–5 min | Round-the-room one-word check (§9 "finished early") |
| 5–10 min | §13 Finish-Early Extension — bullet peer-review pair-share |
| 10–20 min | §13 Sub-block 1 only — Builder Step 1 (Contact) live |
| 20–30 min | §13 Sub-blocks 1 + 2 — Contact + one Work Experience entry |
| 30+ min | Full 60-Min Variant — all 3 sub-blocks + optional close |
Differentiation in the variant
- For advanced learners (already wrote a resume once, came to polish): Default to the full 60-Min Variant. They need application time more than they need slides re-explained. During Sub-block 2, give them a stretch — "rewrite one of your strong bullets for a totally different industry (餐廳 → 倉庫, 看護 → 零售). See if 動詞 + 數字 still carries it." This is the suite's strongest stretch task because it exposes whether they actually grasped the pattern or just memorized one example.
- For mixed-proficiency rooms (the typical SGV room): Pair an advanced participant with a beginner during Sub-block 1. The advanced participant gets to teach (deeper learning, plus a moment to feel useful in a room where they're often quiet); the beginner gets a peer scaffold who can answer "這格寫什麼?" in real-time Mandarin without your time.
- For beginner-heavy rooms (lots of "我從來沒寫過履歷" first-timers): Shrink Sub-blocks 2 and 3, expand Sub-block 1 to 15 min. Keep Sub-block 2 to ONE bullet, not two. Focus on Contact + one verb-only bullet ("Served customers daily" without the number is okay for a first pass). They can add the number at the CSC 1-on-1. Language-light, document-based, no decisions about credentials or gap-year framing in the room — those go to 1-on-1 every time.
Routing & boundary
Same rules as the 30-min core: no legal, tax, immigration, or medical advice. The applied block is document-filling and bullet-rewriting — never decision-making about the participant's individual immigration, tax, or licensing situation. Specifically:
- Work-authorization questions during Sub-block 1 ("我還沒有工卡,可以填嗎?") Continue Sub-block 1 with them. Don't let it derail the room.
- ITIN / tax questions during Sub-block 2 ("我用 ITIN 報稅會不會影響?") Continue.
- Chinese/Taiwan credential questions during Sub-block 3 ("我的護士執照怎麼辦?") Continue.
Always close by naming the 1-on-1 follow-up: CSC office for resume review, AJCC for work-auth + sector licensing, VITA for tax, WES for credential evaluation.
14 · Flashcards & Activities ·
There is a 6-card take-home deck for this workshop — vocabulary, a dialogue, a fact sheet, tips, useful info, and a diagram.
Print 打印: 打开卡片 Open the deck · 直接打印 Print now. Prints 2 cards per landscape sheet (3 sheets per deck). Print one deck per participant, plus 1–2 spare decks for games; cut along the dashed lines.
Hand them out at the close (§10) — the deck is the take-home companion to the written action plan.
Best-fit activities for THIS workshop (full menu of 8 at the flashcards page) ·
Partners quiz each other on the terms, then flip to check.
Pairs read the dialogue in both languages, switch roles, then swap in their own situation.
Always close with · 收尾必做 — 带走一张 Keep One Card (whole deck 整套 · 2 min): each participant picks the ONE card most useful to them right now and tells a neighbor why.
