Workshop 01 — Career Pathways · Facilitator Lesson Plan
For: CSC office staff, case managers, bilingual volunteers You don't need to be an expert in this topic. You need to be a calm bilingual presence who can read the room, follow this script, and route hard questions to the right resource.
1 · At-a-Glance
| Workshop | 01 — Career Pathways /
| Duration | 30 min core + 10 min Q&A |
| Audience | 6–20 LEP Chinese adults, mostly 40+, intermediate ESL |
| You'll need | Laptop, projector, WiFi, printed Quick Reference Card (section 12), bilingual sign-in sheet, ~20 copies of the resources handout, backup phone with workshop URL bookmarked, extra pens — slide 13 asks everyone to write a goal. |
| Slides URL | https://career-pathways-workshop.pages.dev/ |
| Handout URL | https://career-pathways-workshop.pages.dev/resources |
2 · Learning Objectives
After this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Name one in-demand LA industry that fits their interests, with its wage range (e.g., Healthcare $17–$28/hr).
- Identify one training pathway that fits their timeline — Adult School (~6 mo), Vocational Cert (3–12 mo), Community College (2 yr), or On-the-Job (start now).
- Write a SMART career goal with a first step and a deadline (slide 13 worksheet, taken home).
- List two job-finding channels they will check this week — likely a 微信群 plus one of: ChineseInLA, AJCC walk-in, Indeed, friend/同乡.
These are verbs participants can perform inside the workshop. The point is not "understand career pathways" — it's leaving with a written goal and two concrete channels.
3 · Pre-Workshop Checklist (15 minutes before start)
Tech
- Open
https://career-pathways-workshop.pages.dev/— language toggle is top-right; it shows the OPPOSITE language (if it says "中文" you're in English mode). - Default the room to 中文.
- Click the reveal buttons on slide 5 (Activity) and slide 7 (Q1, then Q2) — confirm answers appear.
- Mirror to projector. No audio needed.
- Bookmark the URL on your phone — deck works offline after first load (service worker).
- Test WiFi by loading one external link from the resources page.
Materials
- Print ~20 copies of
/resources— the Career Goal Worksheet section (bottom of the handout) backs up slide 13. - Print the Quick Reference Card (section 12); set it on the lectern.
- Bilingual sign-in sheet at the door.
- Pens at every seat.
Room
- U-shape if ≤12 people; rows if ≥13.
- Water available; accessible aisle if needed.
Yourself
- Skim this plan (15 min).
- Say the slide 1 bilingual opening aloud once.
- Memorize three wages cold: Healthcare $17–28, Construction $20–45, Logistics $18–35. Wage questions land on slide 4 every time.
- Re-read Q&A section 8 — be ready for Q1 (degree?), Q2 (no SSN?), Q3 (too old at 50+?).
4 · Audience Snapshot (read before walking in)
Most participants are 40–65, arrived in the US 1–10 years ago, and live in Monterey Park, Alhambra, San Gabriel, Rosemead, or Chinatown. They are already working — at a restaurant, 99 Ranch, a warehouse, a salon, a daycare — and want a better-paying next job, but don't know what training is free, what jobs accept their English level, or whether community college is "for them." Most have family depending on their income, so they can't quit work to retrain full-time. They came because a CSC case manager said "this will help you plan."
5 · Cultural & Bilingual Tips for This Workshop
- Tip 1 — frame, not prescribe. Don't say "你应该读社区大学." The slide 6 bar chart does the persuading. You just narrate.
- Tip 2 — name the "starting over" friction. Many had professional jobs in China (teacher, accountant, engineer) and feel shame about "入门工作." On slide 3, point at Step 1 and say: "在美国, 大家都从这里开始, 不分年龄, 不分以前做什么. 这是起点, 不是终点." That one sentence lands harder than the whole ladder.
- Tip 3 — bilingual cadence. Chinese heading first, then English, then point at the visual and explain in Chinese. Do NOT translate every subtitle — the deck shows it. Translate ONE phrase per slide aloud.
- Tip 4 — face-saving. Never ask "谁还没找到工作?" or "谁英语不好?" (if someone…) framing. On SMART, give your example first, then say "想一下你自己的, 不用说出来."
- Tip 5 — wages are concrete; jargon is not. Pair English terms with Chinese the first time.
6 · Slide-by-Slide Script
How to use: One block per slide. SAY = your opening line. POINT TO = where your finger goes. ASK = a real question. WATCH FOR = the confusion that usually shows up. IF SHORT = the trim card.
— "Welcome. In 30 minutes we'll do three things: 1) LA industries hiring now, 2) which learning path fits you, 3) write down your next step."
POINT TO: Big title; subtitle "从今天开始, 规划你的未来."
— Take 2–3 quick answers.
WATCH FOR: Silence. Wait 7 seconds. Then offer your own: "我希望大家走出去的时候, 知道下一步该做什么."
IF SHORT: Skip ASK. Name the three things, advance.
— "Three steps: explore industries, plan a path, act — write it down, take it home."
POINT TO: The three numbered cards 1🔍 2📋 3🚀.
ASK: None. Move fast.
WATCH FOR: People still settling. Give them 10 seconds.
IF SHORT: 30 seconds, advance.
Slide 3 · What is a Career Pathway? — Ladder · ⏱ 2 min
— "Not one jump. One step at a time — entry job, skills, better job."
POINT TO: Bottom rung "入门工作," then trace UP through "技能提升" to "更好的工作."
— "Which step are you on now?" Add "心里想一下" (just think about it) — they don't have to answer aloud.
WATCH FOR: Embarrassment about Step 1. Use the Tip-2 line: "在美国, 大家都从这里开始."
IF SHORT: Skip ASK. Trace bottom-to-top with your finger.
— "If you had a professional job back home, which skills carry over, and which need a US credential layered on top?" Pair them with one named resource (e.g., teacher → LAUSD substitute permit; accountant → community college bookkeeping cert) but do not promise licensure equivalency — route to CSC 1-on-1.
SCAFFOLD (beginner): Skip the ASK entirely. Just trace the ladder bottom-to-top with your finger, repeat the Tip-2 line slowly: "起点 — 不是 — 终点." Three beats. Let it sit. If a participant looks anxious, make eye contact and nod once — no words needed.
Slide 4 · In-Demand Industries in LA · ⏱ 3 min
— "Six industries hiring most in LA. Each card shows the typical wage."
POINT TO: Each card in turn. Linger on the wage pill — that's what they came to hear. Read each range aloud in English: "seventeen to twenty-eight dollars per hour."
Take 3 quick hands. Don't go deep — slide 5 does that.
WATCH FOR: Wage challenges ("Healthcare真的有28块吗?"). Don't promise wages.
IF SHORT: Read titles only, skip ASK.
Slide 5 · Activity — Which Industry Fits You? · ⏱ 3 min (INTERACTIVE)
— "Quick exercise. Which of these four sounds most like you?"
POINT TO: The four "我喜欢…" options. Read each Chinese sentence aloud.
— "Quietly pick one. Raise your hand when ready."
REVEAL: When ~half the room has hands up, click 揭晓答案 / Reveal Matches. Industry matches appear.
WATCH FOR: "我喜欢两个."
IF SHORT: Read 2 of 4 statements, then reveal all four.
Slide 6 · Education Options — Time-to-Job Bar Chart · ⏱ 3 min
— "Four learning paths. Longer bar = longer time."
POINT TO: The SVG bars top-to-bottom: Adult School (~6 mo), Vocational Cert (3–12 mo), Community College (2 yr), On-the-Job (start now). Trace each.
Take a show of hands.
Point to the bottom note.
WATCH FOR: Confusion that Community College = 4-year university. Pasadena." Point to the ELAC/PCC school-note line.
IF SHORT: Skip show of hands; narrate the chart and key line.
Slide 7 · True or False Quiz · ⏱ 3 min (INTERACTIVE — two reveals)
— "Two questions. Hands up for TRUE."
POINT TO: Q1 — "在美国找好工作一定需要大学文凭."
POINT TO: Q2 — "加州社区大学学费很低."
WATCH FOR: Surprise at Q1 FALSE. Pause and let it land. This is the room's "aha" moment.
IF SHORT: Do Q1 only. Skip Q2.
STRETCH (advanced): After Q1 FALSE lands, ask the room: "谁能说出一个不需要文凭、起薪25块以上的工作?" — "Name a job that needs no degree and starts at $25+/hr." Take 2–3 answers. Likely answers: CDL truck driver ($25–35), HVAC tech ($25–40), electrician apprentice ($22–30), phlebotomy with cert ($22–28). Affirm each, name the credential, point back to slide 6 for the training path. Caps the "aha" with a concrete next step instead of letting it dissipate.
SCAFFOLD (beginner): Before reading Q1 aloud, hold up TWO fingers — one for 对 (TRUE), one for 错 (FALSE) — and have the room point. No voting pressure. After the reveal, repeat the verdict in Chinese only, slowly: "错 — 不一定 — 需要 — 文凭." For Q2, same gesture: thumbs up = 对, thumbs down = 错. Visual beats verbal here.
Slide 8 · Setting a SMART Career Goal · ⏱ 2 min
— "Now we set a goal. SMART — five letters, five criteria."
POINT TO: Each letter: S 具体的 · M 可衡量的 · A 可实现的 · R 现实的 · T 有时限的.
Point to each SMART letter as it maps to the example (6个月=T, CNA课程=S, 找到工作=M).
WATCH FOR: People stuck.
IF SHORT: Read the example only. Skip ASK — they'll write on slide 13.
Slide 9 · Steps to Move Up — 4-Circle Diagram · ⏱ 2 min
— "Three steps plus a goal star."
POINT TO: Each SVG circle: 1 Certify, 2 Entry, 3 Advance, ★ Goal. The dashed line before the star means "this part is up to you."
Pause, then point to the note: "大多数人需要2–5年完成这个过程."
WATCH FOR: Discouragement at "2–5 years."
IF SHORT: Trace four circles, read the 2–5 years note, advance.
Slide 10 · Free & Low-Cost Training in LA · ⏱ 2 min
— "Four places in LA offer free or very low-cost training."
POINT TO:
- LATTC — career certificates
- WorkSource LA — "他们可以帮你付培训费."
ASK: None.
WATCH FOR: "需要身份吗?" Then route to CSC after the workshop. Do not give immigration advice.
IF SHORT: Name the four, point to URLs.
Slide 11 · Where to Find Jobs — 5 Channels · ⏱ 3 min
— "After training, where do you find jobs? Five channels. First — WeChat groups."
POINT TO:
This is how most participants will actually find their first job.
- 🌐 ChineseInLA.com — "北美最大的华人分类网站."
- 🏢 AJCC / WorkSource LA — "一对一中文咨询."
— "If anyone already uses WeChat job groups, raise your hand. If not, no problem — ask the person next to you to add you. Fastest first step."
WATCH FOR: Quiet shame about not having a group. Reframe: it's not a private thing, just ask the person next to you.
IF SHORT: Name 微信群 + AJCC only.
— "If you already use WeChat groups, level up: find one where employers post directly (faster than reposted listings); set keyword alerts on 招/招聘/聘." 30 seconds, then move on.
SCAFFOLD (beginner): Don't ask for hands. — "In a moment, turn to your neighbor and ask: 'Do you have a job WeChat group? Can you add me?'" Model the sentence; have them repeat it once in chorus. That's their first action, taken before they leave the room.
Slide 12 · How CSC Can Help — 5 Services · ⏱ 2 min
— "What CSC does for you. Five things."
POINT TO: Address and phone: 767 N. Hill St., LA 90012 · (213) 808-1758.
WATCH FOR: People writing down the phone — encourage that.
IF SHORT: Phone + address only. Skip ASK.
Slide 13 · Your Action Plan — WRITE IT DOWN · ⏱ 3 min
— "Most important step now. Pick up your pen. Written goals are 3× more likely to happen."
POINT TO: The three rows: 我的职业目标 / 我的第一步 / 我要在这个日期前完成.
ASK: Nothing — this is silent writing time. Give 90 seconds. Walk the room. If a line is blank, lean in quietly: "我帮你想一个? 想做什么行业?"
SAY (at 90 sec): "好, 不一定要完美. 现在带回家, 贴在冰箱上." Point to "把这张纸带回家."
WATCH FOR: People who write the goal but leave "第一步" blank. Tap that line — that's what makes it real.
IF SHORT: 60 seconds instead of 90. Never skip this slide — it is the workshop.
STRETCH (advanced): For participants who finish in under 60 sec: lean in and ask, "这个第一步, 这周哪一天做? 几点? 跟谁?" — "This first step — which day this week, what time, with whom?" Have them write the day + time on the line below "第一步." Specificity is what turns a written goal into an actual call/walk-in.
SCAFFOLD (beginner): If someone's whole worksheet is blank at 60 sec, kneel/squat next to them (eye-level, never standing over) and offer a fill-in-the-blank: "我的目标是 ___ 行业. 我的第一步是这周 ___ 联系 ___." — "My goal is the ___ industry. My first step is to contact ___ on ___ this week." Help them pick from slide 4's six industries by pointing. Write the day in for them if needed. Never leave a worksheet blank.
Slide 14 · Resources + QR — Closing · ⏱ 2 min
(213) 808-1758." — "That's it. Three things: 1) your written goal, 2) WeChat + AJCC for jobs, 3) CSC phone (213) 808-1758."
POINT TO: The QR code on the right.
Take 2–3 hands. Affirm each.
WATCH FOR: People who linger after the close. They have private questions about status, age, money. Stay 5–10 minutes after.
7 · Interactive Moments
| Slide | Type | Time | Prompt | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | Show of hands | 1 min | "哪个行业让你想多了解?" | 3 hands max — slide 5 is the deep one |
| 5 | Pick + reveal | 3 min | "哪一句最像你?" → click 揭晓答案 | Success = everyone silently picks one |
| 7 | Vote + double reveal | 3 min | Q1 (FALSE) → click 揭晓 · Q2 (TRUE) → click 揭晓 | Q1 FALSE is the "aha" — let it sit |
| 11 | Show of hands | 1 min | "如果有人在用微信群找工作, 举手." | If hands stay down, model: "下课问旁边的人加你." Never single out non-holders. |
| 13 | Silent writing | 3 min | Write goal · first step · deadline | Walk the room; help blank "第一步" lines |
Total interactive time: ~11 min of 30 (37%) — on target.
8 · Common Participant Questions (Q&A Anchor)
Rule: Never give legal, tax, immigration, or medical advice. Always route to a named resource.
Do I need a college degree?
You say: "不需要. 看刚才的对错题第一题 — 答案是错. 护理助理、电工、CDL司机, 短期证书就可以做." Route to: Slide 6 bar chart, slide 10 (LATTC, AJCC, Adult Schools).
I don't have status or an SSN.
Route to: CSC case manager 1-on-1 + CHIRLA (213) 353-1333. Do not advise.
I'm over 50 — too late?
You say: "不晚. 医疗、儿童保育、酒店服务特别欢迎成熟的工作者. CSC帮过60岁的人拿到CNA证书." Route to: Slide 4 industries, CSC counseling (slide 12).
My English is weak.
Route to: Slide 10 (Adult Schools), CSC free ESL (slide 12).
Community college tuition + aid?
Pasadena." Route to: ELAC, PCC, LACCD (slide 6).
Can I work and study?
You say: "可以. 成人学校晚上和周末都有课, 社区大学也有夜班." Route to: Slide 6, slide 10.
How to join a WeChat job group?
ChineseInLA.com不需要加群." Route to: Slide 11, CSC's WeChat after workshop.
WorkSource really pays?
Route to: ewdd.lacity.gov, nearest AJCC walk-in (slide 10).
9 · Recovery Plans
Internet fails: Use the printed handout (all URLs/phones on it). Deck works offline via service worker on your phone after first load. Skip external-link demos.
Only 3 people show up: Sit in a circle. Replace show-of-hands (slides 4, 11) with going around one by one. Spend extra time on slide 13 — look at each person's written goal. Skip the slide 7 vote — just walk through Q1 + Q2 conversationally.
25+ people show up: Chairs in clusters of 4. Pair-shares replace show-of-hands. On slide 13, call out at 60 sec ("30 seconds more"). Stay 10 extra minutes at the door — that's where private questions land.
The group is silent: Wait 7 seconds. Reframe with "如果有人…" Share your own story: "我刚来美国的时候也不知道怎么开始. 我第一份工作是 [X]."
One participant dominates: "好的, 谢谢分享. 我们听听其他人的看法." Walk toward another part of the room.
Running long (>5 min over at slide 7): Use IF SHORT items on slides 4, 6, 9, 10. Cut slide 7 Q2. Protect slides 11, 13, 14 — those are the takeaway.
If you finish early (5 / 10 / 15 min spare):
Don't default to "any questions?" — silence will eat the time. Run one of these activities matched to your spare-time budget.
- 5 min spare — Round-the-room one-word check: "用一个词说说, 你这周要做的第一步是什么?" / "In one word, what is your first step this week?" Take 8–10 quick answers ("微信", "AJCC", "成人学校", "问朋友", "CNA"). Don't comment on each — just nod and move. Closes the loop on slide 13 without dragging.
- 10 min spare — Run the "First Step Swap" pair-share (see §13 → Finish-Early Extension). Each person reads their slide 13 "我的第一步" aloud to a neighbor; the neighbor asks one concrete question. You collect 2–3 strong examples and read them back. This rescues anyone whose "第一步" line was still blank.
- 15 min spare — Use Sub-block 1 of the 60-Min Variant (see §13): "Open it now" — each participant pulls out their phone and acts on their first step in the room (open WeChat to ask for a group, open ChineseInLA, save the nearest AJCC's address). Hands-on. 15 min stands alone.
If a question goes runaway long:
- "好问题. 让我先记下来, 我们在 1-on-1 或者资源页面里看更深." — "Good question. Let me write it down — we'll go deeper in 1-on-1 or on the resource page."
- Write it visibly on a whiteboard or paper "parking lot." Move on.
Immigration/tax/legal question: Do NOT answer. "这个问题最好不要在这里回答 — 每个人情况不一样. 工作坊结束后, 我帮你联系CSC的case manager." Write the name + question down. Hand off same day.
10 · Closing & Next Steps (last 5 minutes)
Translation: "That's all. Three things: 1) the goal you wrote — stick it on your fridge 2) WeChat + AJCC for jobs — do one this week 3) CSC phone (213) 808-1758. Next: 1) take the handout 2) scan the QR 3) see me after if you want 1-on-1."
Hand out: Resources handout (printed from /resources). Point to the QR on slide 14 AND on the handout. Show where the CSC contact is.

The one thing that matters most: Slide 13. Every participant leaves with a written goal, a first step, and a date. Everything else is setup.
13 · 60-Minute Variant (when you have a full hour)
Use this when: Your slot is 60 minutes instead of 30+10, OR you finish the 30-min core with significant time remaining, OR a CSC case manager has flagged the room as "ready for action — they need a push." The variant ADDS 30 min of hands-on applied work after the 30-min core. It does NOT re-run the slides.
Don't lecture longer. The 30-min teach is calibrated for LEP-adult attention. Extra time goes to PRACTICE — phones out, real groups joined, real AJCC hours saved, real first contacts made before they leave the room.
Finish-Early Extension — "First Step Swap" (10 min — drop in after slide 13 or at close)
This activity rescues the workshop's keystone slide. If anyone's "我的第一步" line is blank or vague, this is when it gets fixed.
— "Take out the paper you just wrote on. Pair with the person next to you. You'll read your first step aloud to your partner." Pair odd-numbered participants with the facilitator or a bilingual volunteer; never leave someone without a partner.
- Activity (7 min): - Round 1 (3 min) — Person A reads their 目标 + 第一步 + 完成日期 aloud. Person B asks ONE concrete question from this list (project the list or read it): - "这周哪一天能做?" - Round 2 (3 min) — Swap. Person B reads, Person A asks. - During the rounds, walk the room. Listen for strong examples ("这周三下午, 我去Monterey Park的AJCC, 问CNA培训") and weak ones ("找工作"). For the weak ones, kneel down, ask one question yourself: "什么工作? 这周哪天能开始?" - 1 min buffer — invite anyone whose partner's question was hard to revise their worksheet on the spot.
- Debrief (2 min): Read 2–3 strong examples back to the room — by industry, not by name: "听到一位说, 周三去阿罕布拉成人学校问ESL晚班. 听到一位说, 这周加三个招聘微信群." Then say, "看一下你自己写的 — 是这么具体的吗? 不是的话, 现在改一下." Give 30 seconds for revisions. Stop. Move on.
60-Minute Variant — "Open It Now" Applied Block (30 min, added after Slide 13)
Most career workshops end with intention. This block ends with action taken in the room — a WeChat message sent, an AJCC address saved, a job alert set up. Participants leave with proof of one completed first step, not just a written goal.
Time: 30 min (35 if you include the 5-min close below)
Materials added:
- 1 printed copy per participant of the "Channel Picker" half-sheet (left column: 5 channels from slide 11; right column: blank line for "what I did") — print from the resources page or hand-make on letter paper folded in half.
- 1 backup phone for participants without smartphones (CSC office phone works).
- 1 printed list of the 3 nearest AJCC addresses + hours (Monterey Park, El Monte, Pasadena). Tape it to the wall by the door so people can photograph it on their way out.
- 2 bilingual volunteers (or 1 volunteer + you) to circulate. This block does not work solo — too many participants need 1-on-1 help to send a first message.
Sub-block 1 — Pick & Pair · ⏱ 10 min
AJCC? ChineseInLA? Indeed? 朋友?" Have each person circle ONE channel on the Channel Picker sheet. (2 min)
- Pair by channel — all WeChat-pickers together, all AJCC-pickers together, etc. If a channel has only one person, fold them into the WeChat group (default). (2 min)
- In pairs: each person says out loud to their partner what they're about to do. "我现在要打开微信, 问 [name] 加我进招聘群." "我现在要在Google Maps找Monterey Park AJCC, 看几点开门." Saying it aloud is the trigger to actually do it. (6 min for verbalize + start)
Sub-block 2 — Open It Now · ⏱ 10 min
- Phones out. Each person takes the action they just verbalized. Facilitator + volunteers circulate. Help as needed — typing the Chinese message, finding the AJCC on Maps, setting an Indeed keyword alert. (8 min)
- Common help moments: - WeChat: Compose the message: "你好, 我想加招聘群. 可不可以加我?" Send to one specific person. If they don't have anyone to ask — partner up in the room, exchange WeChat, one adds the other to a group right now. - ChineseInLA.com: Open the 招聘 board. Save 2–3 listings that match the chosen industry. Screenshot. - AJCC: Open Google Maps, type "AJCC near me" or "WorkSource center". Pick the nearest. Photograph the hours. Set a calendar reminder for the next walk-in. - Indeed/LinkedIn: Set a keyword alert (e.g., "CNA Monterey Park", "warehouse Rosemead"). Confirm email arrives. Pick ONE person in their life to call/text this week. Write the name + day on the worksheet.
- Each person writes on the Channel Picker sheet what they did (1 sentence). (2 min)
- Facilitator boundary: You are helping with the technical step (how to open the app, where the button is). You are NOT advising on which job to apply to, what wage to accept, or whether their status qualifies. If they ask: "这个我们一对一聊, CSC的case manager可以帮你看具体情况."
Sub-block 3 — Lock the Next Touch · ⏱ 10 min
- Each pair now picks a second action — the NEXT thing after today's first step. (3 min)
- Write the second action on the bottom of the Channel Picker sheet, with a specific date. (2 min)
- Round-robin around the room — each person says, in one sentence: "今天我做了 [X]. 下一步是 [Y], 在 [date]." No questions, no commentary, just the line. Facilitator nods. Volunteer writes 1-line summary in the workshop log for follow-up. (5 min for 10–15 people)
Close (5 min, optional — use if you have 65 min): "好, 把刚才写的两张纸 — 目标worksheet和Channel Picker — 钉在一起, 带回家. 一周以后, CSC会发微信问大家做到了哪一步. 做不到也没关系, 但我们想知道哪里卡住了, 可以帮你." — "Staple the two sheets, take them home. In one week, CSC will WeChat-check what step you made. If you got stuck, that's the question we want to hear — that's what 1-on-1s are for."
When to use what — quick rules
| Spare time | Use |
|---|---|
| 0–5 min | Round-the-room "one-word first step" check (§9 "If you finish early") |
| 5–10 min | §13 Finish-Early Extension — "First Step Swap" pair-share |
| 10–20 min | §13 Sub-block 1 ("Pick & Pair") of the 60-Min Variant |
| 20–30 min | §13 Sub-blocks 1 + 2 ("Pick & Pair" + "Open It Now") |
| 30+ min | Full 60-Min Variant (Sub-blocks 1, 2, 3) + 5-min close |
Differentiation in the variant
- For advanced learners (already employed, looking to level up): Run the 60-Min Variant as the default. In Sub-block 2, push them past WeChat groups → set up an Indeed keyword alert AND draft a one-line message to a former coworker. They get the most ROI from the application step, not the teach.
- For mixed-proficiency rooms: In Sub-block 1, pair an advanced participant (someone who already uses WeChat job groups, knows what AJCC is) with a beginner. The advanced person becomes a peer teacher — shows the beginner where the search button is, helps them type the first message. This is the SGV way; people teach each other.
- For beginner-heavy rooms (recent arrivals, low digital literacy): Shrink Sub-block 3 to 5 min, expand Sub-block 2 to 15 min, and default everyone to WeChat groups (most familiar channel). Volunteers should be ready to physically take the phone, navigate to the right screen, hand it back. Don't run Sub-block 3's round-robin — too much spotlight. Instead, end with the facilitator collecting Channel Picker sheets at the door for follow-up.
Routing & boundary
Same rules as the 30-min core: no legal, tax, immigration, or medical advice. This block has participants taking action on their phones, which means status/SSN/age questions WILL come up live. Then route to CSC case manager + CHIRLA (213) 353-1333 after the workshop. The applied block is hands-on for document-discovery, message-sending, and contact-saving — never for deciding the participant's individual immigration/legal/tax path.
14 · Flashcards & Activities ·
There is a 6-card take-home deck for this workshop — vocabulary, a dialogue, a fact sheet, tips, useful info, and a diagram.
Print 打印: 打开卡片 Open the deck · 直接打印 Print now. Prints 2 cards per landscape sheet (3 sheets per deck). Print one deck per participant, plus 1–2 spare decks for games; cut along the dashed lines.
Hand them out at the close (§10) — the deck is the take-home companion to the written action plan.
Best-fit activities for THIS workshop (full menu of 8 at the flashcards page) ·
Pairs read the dialogue in both languages, switch roles, then swap in their own situation.
One partner explains the diagram in their own words; the other adds one thing.
Always close with · 收尾必做 — 带走一张 Keep One Card (whole deck 整套 · 2 min): each participant picks the ONE card most useful to them right now and tells a neighbor why.
