Workshop 06 — Digital Skills for Job Seekers · Facilitator Lesson Plan
For: CSC office staff, case managers, bilingual volunteers You don't need to be an expert in this topic. You need to be a calm bilingual presence who can read the room, follow this script, and route hard questions to the right resource. If you can set up Gmail on your own phone and type a search into Indeed, you can run this workshop.

After this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Set up a Gmail account on their phone — and explain why a Gmail (not just WeChat) is needed to apply for US jobs.
- Choose a strong password and know to write it on paper, not store it in the phone.
- Search Indeed using a specific role + city (e.g., "cook · Los Angeles") instead of generic Chinese terms.
- Recognize what NOT to put on a US job application — photo, age, marital status, SSN before offer.
- Know where to get free help — CSC computer lab, LA Public Library, AJCC.
3 · Pre-Workshop Checklist (15 minutes before start)

- Test the projector mirror; turn phone brightness all the way up if you'll mirror it.
- Bookmark the workshop URL on your phone as backup.
- Test WiFi by loading indeed.com from the projector laptop.

- Print ~20 copies of the resources handout (
/resources— 6 sections, prints clean). - Print this Quick Reference Card (section 12) and keep it on the lectern.
- Place ~20 blank index cards (or sticky notes) at seats — for Slide 3 password-writing.
- Sign-in sheet (bilingual) at the door, pens at every seat.

- Power strip near where people will sit — many will pull out phones to try along with you.

4 · Audience Snapshot (read before walking in)
These are Chinese-speaking adults in SGV — Alhambra, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel — most aged 40–65, many arrived in the last 5–15 years. They use WeChat fluently for family, news, payments, and informal job leads in Chinatown 朋友圈. But when they try to apply to a non-Chinese employer (warehouse, hotel housekeeping, chain restaurant, caregiving agency), the application form asks for an email address and they get stuck. They may share a phone with a spouse, may have never typed an English password, and may have heard rumors about "Indeed scams" from WeChat groups. They came today because someone said CSC could help them get unstuck.
5 · Cultural & Bilingual Tips for This Workshop
- Tip 1 — Frame the Gmail, don't moralize. Don't say "you should have a Gmail." Say "美国雇主用电邮联系你 — 你需要一个让他们能读出你名字的邮箱。" ("American employers contact you by email — you need one they can read your name from.") The system, not the participant, is what needs explaining.
- Tip 2 — Name the WeChat → Gmail register shift directly. Many in the room use a nickname (cutebaby2020, lucky888) for WeChat and it's totally fine there. The shift is: WeChat is for family and friends; Gmail is for strangers and employers. Use real name in Gmail. This is the single most important cultural callout in the workshop — appears explicitly on Slide 8 Q1.
- Tip 3 — Pre-teach the jargon on Slide 2. Browser (浏览器), tab (标签页), URL (网址), download (下载), attachment (附件), app (手机软件) — say each Chinese gloss BEFORE you advance to slides that use the English term. The vocab strip on Slide 2 is your scaffold; point to it whenever a participant looks lost.
- Tip 4 — Face-saving framings. NEVER ask "who has never sent an email?" or "who has been scammed on WeChat?" Use "如果你想知道怎么…" ("if you'd like to know how…") or "有些人会遇到这个问题…" ("some people run into this…"). Removes personal exposure.
- Tip 5 — Password writing is the hardest moment. This is where people freeze. Hand them an index card. Say "现在请大家写下来。不是给我看 — 是给自己留底。" ("Now write it down. Not to show me — to keep for yourself.") Then move to the next slide. Don't hover.
- Tip 6 — NO legal advice. Privacy, scam, identity-theft questions → route to CSC services + IdentityTheft.gov + LA County Consumer Protection. You are a digital-skills facilitator, not a lawyer.
6 · Slide-by-Slide Script
How to use: One block per slide. Time budgets sum to ~30 min. SAY = your opening, verbatim or close. POINT TO keeps your finger on the visual. ASK turns the slide into a conversation. WATCH FOR lists confusion that shows up here. IF SHORT is your trim card if you're behind pace.

SAY: "欢迎大家。今天用30分钟,讲三件事:电子邮件、找工作、申请工作。" — "Welcome. In 30 minutes we'll cover three things: email, job search, and applying."
POINT TO: The title "求职数字技能"; the "30 minutes" cue at the bottom-right.
ASK: "你今天来,最想得到什么?" — "What do you most hope to leave with today?" (Take 2–3 quick answers — don't go deep. Common: "我想知道怎么发邮件," "我想找仓库工," "我想用 LinkedIn.")
WATCH FOR: Silence. Normal — wait 5 seconds. If still silence, say: "没关系,我们边讲边问。"
IF SHORT: Skip the ASK. Welcome and advance.
Slide 2 · 三个主题 / Three Topics (Agenda + Vocab Pre-teach) · ⏱ 2 min
SAY: "三个主题:电邮 · 找工作 · 申请。下面这五个英文词,今天会一直用到 — 我先讲一遍,大家不用记,但听到就知道是什么。" — "Three topics: email, job search, applying. Below are five English words we'll keep using today — I'll preview them so you know what they mean when you hear them."
POINT TO: The vocab strip at the bottom — Gmail, Indeed, LinkedIn, App, Apply. Read each one + its Chinese gloss aloud. (Add 浏览器 browser, 标签页 tab, 网址 URL, 下载 download, 附件 attachment verbally if the room looks confident.)
ASK: "哪个词大家最不熟?" — "Which word is least familiar?" Take 1 answer, define it in one sentence.
WATCH FOR: Folks who nod politely but look blank at "LinkedIn." Pause an extra 5 seconds on LinkedIn — explain it as "工作版的朋友圈" (work-version of WeChat Moments). Most "aha" looks happen here.
IF SHORT: Read only Gmail, Indeed, LinkedIn aloud. Skip the ASK.
Slide 3 · 在手机上设置 Gmail / Set Up Gmail on Your Phone · ⏱ 4 min
SAY: "这是今天最重要的一张。每位求职者都需要一个 Gmail — 不是因为 Gmail 比别的好,而是美国雇主认这个,会发邮件给你。" — "This is the most important slide today. Every job seeker needs a Gmail — not because Gmail is better than others, but because US employers use it and will email you."
POINT TO: The 5 numbered steps on the left, then the phone mockup on the right showing "lihong.wang@gmail.com." Then drop down to the red/green password comparison at the bottom.
ASK: "如果你想知道怎么取名字 — 用真名好不好? 比如你叫王丽红,你的邮箱应该叫什么?" — "If you'd like to figure out a username — should it use your real name? E.g., if you're 王丽红, what should the email be?" (Expected: lihong.wang@gmail.com. Praise the answer.)
Demo moment: On your phone, open Gmail app → tap "Add account" → show the "Create account / For myself" screen. Don't actually create one — just show the screen, then close.
Password card moment (90 sec): Hand out index cards (if not already). Say: "现在,请大家在卡片上写一个强密码 — 至少 8 位,有字母、数字、和符号。不要给我看,写完放进钱包,不要存在手机里。" ("Write a strong password on the card — 8+ chars with letters, numbers, symbols. Don't show me. Put it in your wallet, not your phone.") Walk slowly through the aisle — DO NOT look at cards.
WATCH FOR:
- Confusion about "username" vs "password" — clarify: username 是公开的,password 是秘密的。
- Someone using their birthday as password — gently say "生日太容易猜,加一个符号比如 # 或 !"
- Shared phones: ask quietly "用谁的手机?" If shared, suggest going through 1 phone, 1 account.
IF SHORT: Skip the password-writing 90 sec — just point to the red/green comparison and move on. Don't skip the Gmail demo.
STRETCH (advanced): "已经有 Gmail 的同学 — 现在请打开手机,加一个签名:写上你的姓名(英文)+ 一句『Thank you for your consideration』。雇主一回邮件就看到。" — "If you already have Gmail: open the app now, add an email signature with your English name + 'Thank you for your consideration.' Employers see it on every reply."
SCAFFOLD (beginner): If a participant has no smartphone or can't type English on their phone, hand them a printed Gmail-steps handout (Section 1) and pair them with a neighbor who can type. Don't ask them to write the password on the card alone — say "你说,邻居帮你写。" "Tell your neighbor, they'll write it down for you." Then say "记得带走卡片,不要带走邻居的手机号写在上面" — keep the joke light.
Slide 4 · 用 Indeed 在手机上找工 / Use Indeed on Your Phone · ⏱ 3 min
SAY: "Indeed 是美国最大的求职网站。下载是免费的。注册有一个小窍门 — 点 'Sign up with Google',直接用刚才的 Gmail,一秒注册。" — "Indeed is the biggest US job site. Free to download. Quick tip — tap 'Sign up with Google' and use the Gmail you just made. One-second signup."
POINT TO: Step 2 ("Sign up with Google") — this is the bridge from Slide 3 to Slide 4. Make the connection explicit: "刚才的 Gmail,在这里用上了。"
ASK: "如果你住在 Monterey Park,要找餐厅工作 — 你在 'Where' 那一栏写什么?" — "If you live in Monterey Park and want restaurant work, what do you put in 'Where'?" (Expected: "Monterey Park, CA" or "Los Angeles, CA." Both work. Specific city = fewer but more relevant results.)
WATCH FOR:
- People typing job titles in Chinese on Indeed. Indeed is English. Point to the resources handout Section 2 — common Chinese-to-English search terms (server, cook, dishwasher, cashier, warehouse worker, driver, caregiver).
- "Easy Apply" confusion — say "这四个字看到就点,几分钟就能申请完。"
IF SHORT: Skip the ASK. Just walk through steps 1, 3, 4.
STRETCH (advanced): "已经会用 Indeed 的 — 现在设置一个 Job Alert:右上角 → Job Alerts → 输入 role + city → 每天早上 Indeed 会自动发新职位给你。" — "If you already use Indeed: set up a Job Alert now. Top-right → Job Alerts → role + city → Indeed emails you new postings every morning."
SCAFFOLD (beginner): Don't ask the city question to the room — instead point at the screen and say "我念,大家跟着我念:Monterey Park, comma, C, A." ("I'll say it, repeat after me.") If a participant has no smartphone, hand them the handout Section 2 (Chinese-to-English search terms) and circle ONE role they could search at the CSC computer lab next week.
Slide 5 · 在 Indeed 上找工作 / Find a Job on Indeed (Activity) · ⏱ 3 min
SAY: "练一练。王太太想找餐厅工作 — 三个搜索词,哪个最好?" — "Practice. Mrs. Wang wants restaurant work — which search term is best?"
POINT TO: The three options A / B / C. Read each one aloud.
ASK: "举手投票 — A、B、还是 C?" — "Vote by hand — A, B, or C?" Count hands for each. Don't reveal yet.
Then: Click "揭晓答案 · Reveal Answer." The answer is C — specific role + city.
SAY (after reveal): "为什么? A 是中文 — Indeed 几乎全英文。B 太广 — '工作' 会出来几万个结果。C 具体 + 城市 = 最相关。" — "Why? A is Chinese — Indeed is almost all English. B is too broad. C is specific + city = most relevant."
WATCH FOR: Surprise that Indeed doesn't really work in Chinese. Validate: "对,这就是为什么我们今天讲英文搜索词。"
IF SHORT: Skip the vote. Just read A/B/C and reveal C.
Slide 6 · LinkedIn 基础 / LinkedIn Basics · ⏱ 3 min
SAY: "LinkedIn 是『工作版的微信朋友圈』。雇主在面试你之前 — 80% 会先搜你的 LinkedIn。" — "LinkedIn is 'work-version WeChat Moments.' Before they interview you, 80% of employers check your LinkedIn first."
POINT TO: The huge 80% number. Pause 3 seconds on it. Then the 4 icon-cards (photo, work history, Jobs tab, connections).
ASK: "有没有人已经有 LinkedIn 账号?" — "Has anyone already set up LinkedIn?" (If hands go up — ask one person to share if it helped. If no hands — that's the workshop's point.) Do NOT ask "who doesn't have one?" — face-saving.
WATCH FOR: "But I'm just looking for restaurant work — do I need LinkedIn?" Honest answer: "餐厅工不一定需要,但 99 Ranch、连锁店、华埠的大公司都开始用 LinkedIn 找人。10分钟就能建一个,留着备用。" ("Restaurants don't always require it, but 99 Ranch, chain stores, and bigger Chinatown employers are starting to. 10 min to set up, then leave it.")
IF SHORT: Just point to the 80% stat + photo card. Skip the other three icons.
STRETCH (advanced): "已经有 LinkedIn 的同学 — 看一下你的 Headline。它不是你的职位 — 是雇主搜你时最先看到的一句话。试着写:『[职业] · [城市] · open to work』,例如 'Caregiver · San Gabriel Valley · open to work.'" — "If you have LinkedIn: check your Headline. It's not your job title — it's the first line employers see. Try '[role] · [city] · open to work,' e.g., 'Caregiver · San Gabriel Valley · open to work.'"
SCAFFOLD (beginner): If most of the room has no LinkedIn, skip the 4 icon-cards and stay on the 80% stat. Say "今天不要紧 — 知道有这个东西就够了。回家 10 分钟可以建一个,资料 Section 3 有步骤。" ("Today doesn't matter — just knowing it exists is enough. You can set one up in 10 min at home, steps are in handout Section 3.") No smartphone? Point to the handout, no further pressure.
Slide 7 · 填写在线申请表 / Filling Out Online Applications · ⏱ 3 min
SAY: "大部分申请表都问这四类:个人信息、工作经验、教育、推荐人。提前把答案写好 — 申请的时候复制粘贴就行。" — "Most applications ask four sections: personal info, work history, education, references. Prep the answers ahead — then copy and paste when applying."
POINT TO: The 5 numbered items. Linger on #4 (References) — say "推荐人要提前问过他们 — 不要没告诉就写人家电话。"
ASK: "如果你只有一份工作经验,够不够?" — "If you only have one job, is that enough?" (Yes — one real job is fine. Quality over quantity.)
WATCH FOR: Anxiety about SSN. Don't go deep here — Slide 9 handles it.
IF SHORT: Skip the ASK. Read steps 1, 2, 4 aloud only.
Slide 8 · 对还是错? / True or False? (Quiz) · ⏱ 4 min (2 questions × 2 min each)
SAY: "两道题。举手投票:对 TRUE 还是错 FALSE。" — "Two questions. Raise your hand — TRUE or FALSE."
Q1 — SAY: "第一题:一个叫 cutebaby2020@gmail.com 的邮箱,申请工作没问题。对还是错?" — "Q1: An email like cutebaby2020@gmail.com is fine for job applications. True or false?" Count hands. Click reveal.
Answer: FALSE. Use real name email. THIS IS THE CULTURAL CALLOUT — read it slowly: "微信里用昵称没关系。但求职邮箱 — 要用真名。雇主看到 'cutebaby2020' 会直接淘汰。" ("WeChat nicknames are fine. But job-application email — use your real name. Employers will screen out cutebaby2020 immediately.")
Q2 — SAY: "第二题:在线申请表里要写自己的年龄和婚姻状况。对还是错?" — "Q2: You should fill in age and marital status on online applications. True or false?" Count hands. Click reveal.
Answer: FALSE. "美国法律保护求职者 — 雇主在录用前不能要求年龄、婚姻状况、宗教、家庭信息。空着或填 N/A。" ("US law protects you — employers can't legally require age, marital status, religion, or family info before hiring. Leave blank or write N/A.")
WATCH FOR: Disbelief — "在中国都要写的!" ("In China these are required!") Acknowledge: "对,中国习惯不一样。在美国 — 不要写。" Don't moralize the comparison.
IF SHORT: Do Q1 only (the WeChat→Gmail one). Skip Q2 and mention it briefly: "申请表也不用写年龄和婚姻 — 详情看资料。"
STRETCH (advanced): After Q1: "如果有一位朋友的邮箱是 'happyfamily1988@gmail.com' — 你建议他怎么改?" — "If a friend's email is 'happyfamily1988@gmail.com,' what would you suggest he change it to?" Take one answer; reinforce real-name format (firstname.lastname).
SCAFFOLD (beginner): Don't make participants vote out loud — say "心里想 TRUE 还是 FALSE,不用举手。" ("Decide TRUE or FALSE in your head, no need to raise your hand.") Then reveal the answer and read the bilingual explanation slowly. Repeat the WeChat→Gmail callout twice: once in Chinese, once with the English email word emphasized. This is the cultural-load line — slow is correct.
Slide 9 · 申请表上不要写什么 / What NOT to Put · ⏱ 2 min
SAY: "这张总结上一题。左边绿色 ✓ — 该写。右边红色 ✗ — 不要写。最后一条最重要:SSN 收到录用通知 (offer) 后再写,提前给容易被盗用。" — "This summarizes the last question. Green ✓ on the left — include. Red ✗ on the right — don't include. Most important: SSN only after you get a job offer — sharing early risks identity theft."
POINT TO: The right column, then specifically the SSN line.
ASK: "如果雇主在面试前问你年龄,怎么回答?" — "If an employer asks your age before the interview, what do you say?" (Suggested: "I'd prefer to discuss this after we meet." Or simply not answer.)
WATCH FOR: Identity-theft worry. Route immediately: "如果觉得身份被盗用 — 去 IdentityTheft.gov 或来 CSC 找我们,我们帮你联系。" Do NOT give legal advice.
IF SHORT: Read the right column only. Skip the ASK.

Slide 10 · 用 Google Translate 申请工作 / Use Google Translate to Apply · ⏱ 2 min
SAY: "Google Translate 不能代替学英文 — 但能让你不被吓退。三个常用功能:📷 相机拍英文、⌨️ 文字翻译、🎤 对话模式。" — "Google Translate doesn't replace learning English — but it removes the fear barrier. Three common features: 📷 camera, ⌨️ text, 🎤 conversation mode."
POINT TO: The 📷 camera card — most useful for paper applications and PDF forms.
ASK: "用过的请举手。" — "Raise your hand if you've used it." (Most will.) Then: "用过相机功能的?" (Fewer hands — this is what to teach.)
WATCH FOR: "我把整段中文复制粘贴翻译成英文,可以吗?" Honest answer: "可以翻译,但不要原样粘贴 — 雇主能看出来。先翻译,再让朋友或 CSC 看一下,然后再交。"

You say: "Gmail 可以在一个手机上加好几个账号 — 每个家庭成员一个,不会混。但密码要分开保管,每人写在自己的卡片上。" — "You can have multiple Gmail accounts on one phone — one per family member, they don't mix. Just keep passwords separate, each person writes on their own card." Route to: CSC 1-on-1 phone help.
Q3: 我收到一个邮件说我中奖了,要我提供 SSN — 是真的吗? / I got an email saying I won a prize and they want my SSN — is it real?
You say: "这是诈骗 — 真的奖金不需要 SSN,真的雇主在录用前也不要 SSN。直接删除。如果担心身份被盗,去 IdentityTheft.gov 报告。" — "That's a scam — real prizes don't need your SSN, real employers don't need it before offer. Delete it. 9 · Recovery Plans
If the internet fails:
- Use the printed handouts — Section 1 (Gmail steps), Section 2 (Indeed search terms), Section 4 (do/don't table) cover the workshop's heart.
- Open the bookmarked workshop URL on your phone — slides work offline (service worker).
- Skip the Indeed/LinkedIn demos; describe them from the handout.
If only 3 people show up:
- Sit in a circle. Run it as a conversation.
- Skip the Slide 5 vote — discuss as a group.
- Do the password-writing 1-on-1 — walk through each person's choice quickly.
- Spend more time on Q&A. Three real questions beat scripted prompts.
If 25+ people show up:
- Move chairs into clusters of 4.
- Use a mic if available.
- For the Slide 5 + Slide 8 votes, give a 5-second hand-count signal.
- Stay at the door 5 extra minutes — collect WeChat IDs for follow-up.
If the group is silent:
- Wait 7 full seconds before re-asking. Silence is processing.
- Re-ask with "如果你想知道…" framing.
- Share your own example: "我也用真名做 Gmail — 这是我的:[your email]."
If one participant dominates:
- "好的,谢谢分享。我们听听其他人的看法。" Walk physically toward another part of the room.
If you're running long (>5 min over at the halfway mark):
- Cut Slide 5 to a 30-second read-and-reveal (skip the vote).
- Cut Slide 8 Q2 (keep only Q1 — the WeChat→Gmail callout).
- Compress Slide 10 to "Use Google Translate — details in handout."
If a participant gets stuck setting up Gmail mid-workshop:
- Don't pause the deck. Say "你先记下来 — 工作坊结束后,我帮你一起做。" ("Make a note — I'll help you after the workshop.") Move on.
If you finish early (5 / 10 / 15 min spare):
Don't default to "any questions?" — silence will eat the time, and in a digital-skills room a stray "怎么删手机里的病毒?" can swallow 10 minutes. Run one of these activities matched to your spare-time budget.
- 5 min spare — Round-the-room one-word check: "用一个英文词说说,今天你最想记住的一件事是什么?Gmail? Indeed? LinkedIn? 真名? 不写年龄?" / "In one English word, what's the most important thing from today?" Take 8–10 quick answers. Write the words on the whiteboard as they come — closes the loop and reinforces the vocab strip from Slide 2.
- 10 min spare — Live phone-buddy clinic (paired Gmail / Indeed check). Pair each participant with a neighbor. Each pair opens one phone, signs in to Gmail (or pulls up Indeed if Gmail is already done), and the stronger speaker walks the weaker one through ONE step. Walk the aisle for stuck moments — don't sit. Close by asking one volunteer to read their new email address aloud: "lihong.wang@gmail.com — 听起来像不像一个雇主会认真看的邮箱?" Full version in §13.
- 15 min spare — Use the Sub-block 1 of the 60-Minute Variant (see §13) — the live Indeed search. It's the most hands-on 10 minutes of the variant and stands alone as an applied block; participants type one real role + one SGV city and surface real postings while you circulate.
If a question goes runaway long:
- "好问题。让我先记下来,我们在 1-on-1 / 资源页面里看更深。" — "Good question. Let me write it down — we'll go deeper in 1-on-1 / on the resource page."
- Write it visibly on a whiteboard or paper "parking lot." Move on.
If you get a question outside your scope (legal, tax, immigration, identity-theft case):
- Say: "好问题。这个最好让专业的同事帮您看 — 我先记下来。" ("Good question. This is best handled by a specialist colleague — let me note it down.") Then route by topic: - Identity theft / SSN already shared → IdentityTheft.gov + CSC follow-up (213-808-1758). - Tax / ITIN filing → free VITA site (handout has nearest location) — not us. - Immigration status / work authorization → outside legal aid; do NOT advise. CSC can refer. - Driver's license / AB60 → DMV + handout. - Wage theft / unpaid wages → AJCC + CA Labor Commissioner; CSC can connect.
- The phrase "我跟同事确认,联系你" ("Let me check with a colleague and follow up") is always safe.
10 · Closing & Next Steps (last 5 minutes)
SAY (verbatim): "今天就到这里。三件事请记得:1) 每位求职者都需要一个 Gmail — 用真名。 2) Indeed 搜:具体职位 + 城市。 3) 申请表不要写年龄、婚姻、SSN(收到 offer 之前)。 下一步:1) 拿走资料 2) 扫二维码看在线资源 3) 想约一对一时间的,跟我说一下。"

13 · 60-Minute Variant (when you have a full hour)
Use this when: Your slot is 60 minutes instead of 30+10, OR you finish the core 30-min teach with significant time remaining, OR the room asks for hands-on practice — which they almost always do for digital skills. The variant ADDS 30 min of applied phone-in-hand work after the 30-min core. Don't re-teach. The 30-min deck is calibrated; extra time goes to PRACTICE, especially the Indeed search lab where participants stop guessing and start tapping.
Bilingual volunteer pairs are gold here — if you have one extra bilingual person, pair them with the lowest-literacy participant from minute one.
Finish-Early Extension (10 min — drop in mid-workshop or at close)
Live phone-buddy clinic — Gmail / Indeed. This is the activity that closes the loop between "I learned about Gmail" and "I have a Gmail." Drop in after Slide 4 if you finish early, or use it at the close while the room is still warm.
- Setup (1 min): Say "现在请大家拿出手机 — 我们花 10 分钟,真的做一遍。每两个人一组 — 一个会的同学帮一个刚开始的。" ("Take out your phones. We'll spend 10 min actually doing it. Pair up — one who knows helps one who's new.") Pair participants by glancing around: anyone whose phone is open + English-typing fluent = the "buddy"; the rest = the "learner." If a participant has no smartphone, pair them with a buddy whose phone they can sit beside and watch — they fill in the printed Section 1 handout in parallel.
- Activity (7 min): Each pair picks ONE — Gmail signup (if learner has no Gmail) OR Indeed signup with "Sign up with Google" (if Gmail already done). The buddy reads the step aloud in Chinese; the learner taps. Walk the aisle slowly. Stop only when someone is fully stuck — say "我们一起来" and tap one button with them, then walk away. Don't take over the phone. Watch for: shared-phone confusion ("用谁的账号?" — say "今天用您自己的"), birthday-as-password ("生日太容易,加 # 或 !"), and the "Verify your phone number" SMS step (this is normal, not a scam — reassure them).
- Debrief (2 min): Ask for one volunteer to read their new Gmail address aloud: "lihong.wang@gmail.com — 听起来像不像雇主会认真看的邮箱?" Praise the real-name format. Close: "今天这一步,是今天最重要的一步。回家保留卡片。"
60-Minute Variant — Applied Block (30 min, added after Slide 10)
A hands-on Indeed search lab. Participants stop being told about Indeed and start using it on their own phone, in three escalating sub-blocks: search → screenshot → shadow. The facilitator circulates the whole time — for spelling, keyword fixes, password-card check-ins, and shared-phone untangling. Bilingual volunteer pairs are ideal here — if you have an extra bilingual case manager, they cover one half of the room while you cover the other.
Time: 30 min (35 if you include the 5-min wrap below)
Materials added:
- The resources handout Section 2 (8 common-job English search terms — server, cook, dishwasher, cashier, warehouse worker, driver, caregiver, housekeeper) — every participant needs one in front of them.
- Index cards from Slide 3 still on hand for late-arriving password additions.
- A printed sample Indeed job posting (cook · Monterey Park) on the lectern — for the "no smartphone" fallback.
Sub-block 1 — Live Indeed Search · ⏱ 10 min
- Say: "现在每个人 — 在手机上打开 Indeed。一个职位 + 一个 SGV 城市。我念,你们打。" ("Open Indeed on your phone. One role + one SGV city. I say it, you type it.") Use the handout Section 2 to pick a role aloud — e.g., "cook" — and ask each participant to type their OWN city (Monterey Park, Alhambra, Rosemead, San Gabriel, Arcadia, Temple City, El Monte). Walk the aisle. Watch for: typing Chinese into Indeed (point at handout Section 2 — switch to English), wrong city spelling (write it on a sticky note and hand to them), no smartphone (give them the printed sample posting and say "这是一个真的,等下我们一起看").
- After 5 min: ask 3 people to call out the number of results they got. "我有 247 个 results." "我有 18 个." Use the contrast to teach specificity: "247 太多 — 加一个词,例如 'cook part time'。18 太少 — 减一个词,或者扩到 Los Angeles。"
- Close the sub-block by saying: "现在每个人都有一个 list。下一步 — 看一个真的招聘信息。"
Sub-block 2 — Screenshot One Real Posting · ⏱ 10 min
- Say: "找一个你真的想申请的工作 — 点进去看。看完,截图保存:iPhone 同时按右边和左边的按钮;Android 同时按电源和音量减。" ("Find one you'd really apply to. Open it. Then screenshot: iPhone press right+left side buttons together; Android press power+volume-down.") The screenshot becomes their take-home artifact.
- Walk the aisle. Help them spot: posting date (older than 30 days = probably filled), "Easy Apply" badge (good — fewer steps), required documents listed (resume? cover letter? "willing to relocate"?). Don't make them apply yet — just READ. This protects against the "I applied to a scam without thinking" risk.
- Watch for: scam red flags ("$2000/week, work from home, training kit $200" — pull the participant aside and say "这是诈骗,我们一起找另一个"), Chinese-only postings (these are usually fine if the employer is SGV-local — point at Q10 in §8), and postings that ask for SSN BEFORE applying ("不要填 — Slide 9 讲过 — 跳过这个").
- Close: "你刚才看的这个 — 是真的工作,真的雇主。回家可以再看一遍,想清楚再申请。"
Sub-block 3 — Neighbor 'Easy Apply' Shadow · ⏱ 10 min
- Say: "现在 — 不是你申请。是你看着邻居点 Easy Apply 第一步。两人一组 — 一个人打开自己刚才截图的工作,另一个人看着,不要碰手机。看完,说一句:邻居的工作 vs 你的工作,有什么不一样?" ("Now — you don't apply. You watch your neighbor open Easy Apply step 1. Pair up — one opens their saved posting, the other watches without touching the phone. Then say one difference between their job and yours.")
- This is the safest possible "real application" rehearsal — no one actually submits, but each participant sees a real Easy Apply form fill out in front of them. Walk slowly. Affirm when you see good behavior: "对,这里要写真名 — 不是 cutebaby2020." "对,这里 N/A 就可以。"
- Watch for: a participant who taps Submit by accident (it's fine — they can withdraw the application later from Indeed; reassure them, then show them where). Anyone who hits an SSN field BEFORE submitting → STOP THEM: "别填 — 这是 Slide 9 讲的红线。这个工作可能要换。"
- Close: "今天你做了三件事:搜了一个工作,看了一个真的招聘信息,看着邻居开始申请。回家,你已经会了。"
Close (5 min, optional — if you have 65 min total): Round-robin one-line share. Each participant says ONE sentence: "下周我会 ___" / "Next week I will ___." Examples to model: "下周我会回家自己再搜一次。" / "下周我会用 Google Translate 看一个 PDF 申请表。" / "下周我会来 CSC 用电脑室。" Write each one on the whiteboard. Photograph at the end — your follow-up call list.

Differentiation in the variant
- For advanced learners (already have Gmail + Indeed): Run the full 60-Min Variant. They become the "buddies" in the Finish-Early Extension, then they're the demo phone in Sub-block 3. Side prompt: "看一下你 Indeed 账号的 Profile — 上次更新是什么时候?现在更新一下 phone number 和 location。"
- For mixed-proficiency rooms: Pair an advanced participant with a beginner during Sub-block 1 — the advanced participant gets to teach (deeper learning), the beginner gets a peer scaffold. In Sub-block 3, swap the pairs so the advanced person watches the beginner this time — they'll catch errors you'd miss.
- For beginner-heavy rooms (most haven't used Indeed): Expand Sub-block 1 to 20 min. Drop Sub-block 3 entirely. Replace with a group walkthrough — project ONE participant's screen via the demo phone, fill out an Easy Apply together, narrate every field. The "no smartphone" participants get the printed sample posting + a buddy.
- For phone-poor rooms (3+ participants without smartphones): Don't pretend everyone is equipped. Reframe Sub-block 1 as "the people with phones search; the people without phones circle one role on Section 2 of the handout — that's your search list for the CSC computer lab next week." No one sits idle. No one is shamed.
Routing & boundary
Same rules as the 30-min core: no legal, tax, immigration, or medical advice. The variant is hands-on — search, screenshot, shadow — never decision-making for an individual case.
- If a participant in Sub-block 2 finds a posting that requires SSN or work authorization → "这部分我们不能给法律建议 — 来 CSC 一对一,或打 AJCC,他们会帮您看清楚。" (CSC 213-808-1758 · AJCC East SGV 626-934-5700.)
- If a participant in Sub-block 3 hits an identity-theft worry mid-shadow → "好问题。让我先记下来,我们在 1-on-1 看更深。" Whiteboard parking lot. Move on. (IdentityTheft.gov + CSC follow-up.)
- If a participant in Sub-block 2 surfaces a scam posting → pull them aside quietly, name it as a scam ("这是诈骗,真的雇主不会让你付钱"), and route to CSC employment services + FTC (reportfraud.ftc.gov).
- For the "good question / let me write it down" routing card itself — same script as §9: "好问题。这个最好让专业的同事帮您看 — 我先记下来。" Then topic-route (legal → outside legal aid; ITIN → VITA; AB60 → DMV; wage theft → AJCC + CA Labor Commissioner). Never improvise advice.
